Are You Overweight?

Post by PeteC »

"Food for Man and his Beast" thread was the inspiration for this one. Before you answer the poll, look at the below charts. One in metric and one in pounds. The poll is in pounds.

http://www.whathealth.com/bmi/chart-metric.html

http://www.healthchecksystems.com/heightweightchart.htm

I know that these height and weight charts always seem to be on the low side, at least to me? But, that is what the health experts say is ideal so I guess we have to accept it. Perhaps comment what you are doing about it if overweight, if anything. Pete

Per the chart for 5' 10" and medium frame, I'm currently 44 pounds over at 204. That may be bordering on obese and that concerns me. I know I'm too heavy but I feel my ideal with my frame is about 180-185, not 163, so working to get back to 185 is fine with me.

I don't eat that much junk and no dairy, and beer only about once a month now due to an exzema problem where I react badly to those things, but the weight is not coming off. My primary exercise routine of daily swimming has stopped due to pool repairs and this is making a big difference, When swimming I was hovering around 195, now 204. As you age you also tend to become more sedentary and I think that is most of my problem. I'm turning into a couch potato, especially in this hot climate. Pete

The docs reckon that the main worry is if you start to get a podge around your middle - which apparently is one typical sign of potential type 2 diabetis.
I'm fine going by the height/weight ratios, but do feel that a few pounds loss would be better! (Don't we all?)
But interestingly at a routine new GP check this summer they used just the height/weight ratios and weren't keen on BMI index. The nurse told me it can be an inexact guide.
I do walk regularly - every day - even if just to the supermarket, but have never been to a gym in my life and never been into sports, apart from darts! Tend to stand while doing my crafts and run up stairs.
I think a lot of it is down to sheer food intake and preferences. I've never been fussed about the high carb things. Eat the meat and vegetables in a meal, and stop when I'm full, often leaving some potato, rice, pasta or whatever. Those things just don't hold any interest for me when the meat and veg are finished. I do eat dairy - always butter rather than spreads - but very little - and not much cheese these days. Beer - yes - Guinness and stouts. Dates and walnuts for nibbles. Bread is just there to hold a huge filling of whatever! But always wholemeal.
I do think any dietary change should be gradual and made to last, based on healthy things which you really like and can stick with. That way the treats, in moderation, shouldn't do any harm.

Pete, same with me. I'm about an inch taller and a few pounds heavier at the moment. According to the recommended weight charts I'm 50 pounds overweight but like you wrote, I feel very comfortable between 180 and 190 and would be skinny as a runway model at the recommended 159!

I actually went on a program a couple of years ago and lost down to 188 and my wife told me to stop as it made me look older! I guess all that stretched out skin began to sag...

Oops, I was looking at the first chart which I now realize is for women. So the men's chart says 166 for me... still 43 pounds overweight!

But at my age, one of the things I look forward to the most is a good meal with good company so I guess I'm doomed to be a fatso!

i'm just a fat ..... then, but i know i've put on 35kilos since 2004 - need to get it off but not sure how as i only eat 2 meals per day. Even the wife wonders how i'm fat, so she's putting me on a diet. I think i have a very slow metabolism, and eating asian food particularly rice, which our western bodies don't adapt very well too.

Well, I've just checked the charts, and I've nothing to worry about. I've never been overweight though, no matter how much I eat. A mate of mine in the UK always used to comment on the fact that I would eat three times as much as him, and yet he was obese, while I never put on weight at all.

These days however, I think my weight is kept in check through my eating habits, in that I don't eat three meals day, not ever, and on most days, one meal is fine. It just doesn't make sense to me why one should eat just because it's lunchtime or suppertime. Surely you should only eat when you feel hungry. After all, that's how the body tells you it's out of gas, and needs some topping up.

I also eat virtually no western food, and 99% of the meals I eat are home cooked, but most are certainly not what one would call healthy meals. I'm a right lazy bugger, so there's no exercise keeping my weight down, and I drink ample beer to warrant a big belly, but no, it just doesn't happen.

In my opinion though, if being overweight bothers you, you need to lose weight, but if it doesn't bother you, then who the hell cares? You only live once (or at least until proven otherwise....lol).

For some people it is quite possible that their metabolism has slowed down from being in a hot climate....don't need to burn so much fuel as you would in a cold one. I would have thought that this is a common contributing reason why many foreigners gain weight in warmer climates.

Of course.....along with increased alcohol intake and less exercise perhaps in a portion of the populace of expats.

Although there are also those like Takiap that can throw themselves into the abyss of excess and unhealthy lifesytles with little effect....propbably much to the private envy/annoyance of many he has encountered. :thumb:

I did mine and i'm scared to say how much i'm over...! Lets just say its >100...

When I lived in Thailand I was 4 stone lighter due to lots of exercise but now back in the UK I cant exercise nearly as much due to the cold.

I get atheritis in both my knees. Its painful even in clement weather.

That doesn't work for me; I only eat one meal a day also. The problem is it starts around lunch time and lasts until dinner time. I usually eat nothing before noon but once I start I don't stop until around 7 p.m. I love to snack between lunch and dinner!

I don't believe skipping meals is the answer to losing weight - little and often of mainly healthy stuff seems to work - otherwise the body goes into starvation mode. I love the French approach - wonderful food and a real appreciation of ace ingredients, good wine etc but generally don't seem to have an obesity problem (not sure about that - just they don't look as lardy as us from the UK when I'm over there).
Saying that, Thai food is wonderful and both me and my partner have lost a few pounds here just through eating the food which generally is clean (I mean in a low fat way), healthy and light (apart from those bloomn gorgeous Isaan chicken wings which I've now found and can feel the pounds creeping on even just mentioning them). My problem with being here is, as a women, you are always going to feel 'overweight' even if you're not cos the Thai women are so petite and slim and gorgeous. Hey ho, pass me a beer and some wings please....

I'm the perfect weight, but I'm way too short!

The common theory from a few dieticians and personal trainers I know is 5-6 small, well spaced meals a day. The meals should be low fat, higher protein.

The idea is your body is an engine and to maintain it's engine you must feed it regularly and with quality items
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

One interesting theory (That I might try one day) was for 4 weeks to eat 8 Ozs (225grammes) of WHATEVER you want, every 4 hours--so 6 times a day, but strictly 225 grammes--no more, no less. At the end of 2 weeks, you can go back to a normal schedule. HOWEVER, over the course of those 4 weeks your stomach will shrink to the point that you will no longer be comfortable eating big meals, and the weight will continue to shed. I've also seen a variant of this where you eat 6Ozs every 3 Hours--same 48 Ounces per day. Maybe you have some steak for one meal, some veggies for the next, etc. to try to balance the diet out.....

The negatives of these diets(As I see it):
1) Family mealtimes become very difficult
2) Waking up at night to eat (Strict schedules are important)
3) Portion control is a PITA

Interesting that so far our poll results are following the western statistical average that 63-64% of adults are overweight. Our average is 60%. Pete
