Moving to Hua Hin - Any problems likely with Thai Customs?

Post by MajorBloodnok »

Hi, :)

my wife and I plan to move to Hua Hin in June next year. :D

We intend to bring only clothes, Kitchen ware, tools, stereo, tv,
books, cds & dvds.

Who has had experience with Thai Customs, and what kind? - Good, bad?

Any useful advice?

Thanks in advance! :thumb:

Kind regards,

Mike

We took most things that were new out of the boxes. Keep as many receipts as you can. Label each box with the contents and number them. We did not have any problem at all. It arrived one day and was delivered out quickly. If you want a good agent in BKK pm me and I will give you the name.

If the stuff is coming by sea use a customs broker. They know the paperwork, they know the customs bureaucrats and they will be given priority over an individual. Worth the small money IMO.

Use a reliable international removals firm with experience of removals to Thailand with a door to door service
They know how to deal with Thai customs.
The contents of every box must be itemised
Be prepared to pay tea money to the customs via their agent here. If not, they can hold all goods for checking and will charge you a daily storage rate while they do it

If you use a reputable agency then I don't think the question of "Tea Money" will come into it - at least not in my experience. I transferred from the UAE to Thailand 3 months ago and used Allied Pickfords in the UAE and in Thailand (in the UK they trade under the name Team Allied). It was a first class service from beginning to end - once the goods reached Bangkok we had to provide copies of my (Thai) wifes passport to show that she had been living outside Thailand for more than a year to claim exemption from Thai import duties. The goods were cleared within 5 days of arrival and got to HH the next day, we didnt pay a single baht and there was no evidence of any of the boxes had been opened.

I am sure it wont be so easy if neither of you are a Thai national, but I do believe that choosing a reputable agency is the best step in the process.

Does anyone know if you have to have some kind of residence or retirement visa to ship stuff into Thailand?
We have just bought a house in HH and I would like to ship some personal effects over, but we won't be able to live there full time for a few years yet. (more's the pity!)

Mike, are you coming on a 0-A visa (Retirement)? Or is your wife a returning Thai? Either will give you some Customs privileges.

Also, where are you coming from? If USA, your TV will not work here. Thailand is PAL, whereas USA is NSTC.

So if you registered a car in your wife's name would that be taxed exempt too.

As far as I am aware, cars are not exempt under any circumstances, so best to sell and buy when you get here

I don't think they are exempt either. We went into the cost of car shipping, it was very expensive and the duty as I recall was horrendous. The shipping agent for our goods arrival in BKK was very good, not one of our boxes were opened either. Not one breakage either!

Hello guys, :)

many thanks for your valuable advice. :D

I have already contacted a German company with lots of international experience, including Thailand.

So my wife and I, we are both German citizens.

We plan to stay on a "Retirement visa".

Thanks again, and Kind regards,

I used Simpson's in the Uk and they had Schenker in Bangkok to clear and deliver. There was a customs so called 'handling charge' of Bht20,000 for a full container load
