Charity New Year tennis match in Hua Hin

Post by buksida »

World No 1 Caroline Wozniacki will square off with No 3 Victoria Azarenka in Hua Hin on New Year's day, in a charity match to raise funds for flood victims that will also feature Paradorn Srichaphan and American biggun John Ishner.

The Dane, who has been the women's No 1 for the last two years, will return to the beach resort 12 months after losing there to Kim Clijsters in an exhibition match. The World Tennis Charity Invitation is due at 5pm on January 1 at the Hua Hin Centennial Park, and will be televised live by ESPN.

"I had a fantastic time in Thailand last year and it is a pleasure to be able to come back again,'' said Wozniacki, the winner of 18 career titles. "I have seen some of the pictures of the terrible floods and I am delighted to be a part of the tournament and raising money for flood relief."

Rumour has it that the world No 1 might be accompanied by her boyfriend and world golf No 2 Rory McIlroy who is due to play the Thailand Golf Championships two weeks before the charity event.

The women's singles showdown will be followed by the return of former world No 9 Paradorn Srichaphan to the tennis court. Having retired in 2010 due to a wrist injury, the former Thai ace will play the 18th ranked Isner who is known for huge serves as well as his height - 2.06 metres.

"I have practised with him a couple of times. He is a very nice guy. His game is based on serves which is fine with me as I'm not fit enough to stay in long rallies,'' said the 32-yearold Paradorn.

"I still have a month to prepare for the match. You will still see a power game from me. But what's more important is that we are delighted to be part of this charity effort. Also, this is a good opportunity to show the world that Thailand is now recovering from the flooding crisis,'' added Paradorn.

Suwat Liptapanlop, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, said proceeds from the estimated Bt6 million in ticket sales will go to flood relief. Tickets for the 3,000seat Centennial Park will be Bt2,000. Suwat added that all the players would be involved in promotional activities to boost local tourism.

"Wozniacki will arrive on December 26, Isner and Azarenka on December 29. They will be doing activities such as cooking Thai food, giving alms to monks or having spa treatments,'' said Suwat who revealed that Bt20 million will be spent in organising the exhibition match.

Azarenka will make her first appearance in the Kingdom. The Belarusian has won eight WTA titles, three this year. "I am really pleased to come and play for the Thai fans and help raise money to assist the millions of people affected by the devastating floods."

Since September, many provinces in Thailand including some parts of Bangkok have been hit by the worst floods in half a century.

A friend just told me he bought tickets at a desk in Market Village.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Any idea if this will be televised - my dear old Mum who will be in HH at the time, loves her tennis but will struggle being sat outside for a couple of hours in that heat...

World No 1 Caroline Wozniacki and golf star sweetheart Rory McIlroy took a sightseeing at the famous Huay Mongkol Temple in Hua Hin yesterday.

The Dane, who 12 months ago made a visit to this sanctuary place when she played a friendly with Kim Clijsters, and the world No 3 Northern Irish received sacred Buddha amulet from the abbot and then put them around their necks right away.

Woznacki was also blessed by the abbot Phra Ajarn Phairot Papatsaro to have a good luck for the Australian Open , the year's opening Major which starts in Melbourne on January 16.

The two sports icons also took part in some local spiritual activities including paying respect to the famous gigantic Luang Phu Thuad statue and attached golden leaves to another sacred item. Both also proceeded under an elephant statute, a rite believed to bring luck for performers.

Earlier, the Dane along with world No 3 Victoria Azarenka from Belarus and American John Isner, and his girlfriend Madison Mckinley took part in the planting ceremony at Ban Nong Hieng which is His Majesty the King's Development Project.

The three tennis stars helped grow teak sprout trees. More than hundred school students and local people were engaged in the activity which was aimed to grow some 1,100 teak trees.

In the evening, Wozniacki and her boyfriend as well as Azarenka had Energizing Spa at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. The two WTA players as well as Isner and Paradorn Srichaphan will play charity event on January 1 to raise funds for flood relief.

Belarus' Victoria Azarenka and Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand won the World Tennis Charity Invitation Hua Hin at the Centennial Park, InterContinental Hua Hin Resort on Sunday.

World No.3 Azarenka upset Danish world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 7-5 in the first match of the double-header while former world No.9 Paradorn surprised big-hitting American John Isner 6-4, 7-5 later in the evening.

A good crowd turned up to watch the charity event at Hua Hin's Centennial Park and they were treated with an entertaining performance from the world's top players.

"I am very happy that I won the first match of the year," said Azarenka. "I have a great time in Thailand and I think I am really impressed with the Thai people who gave me such a warm welcome."

Wozniacki, whose boyfriend world No.3 golfer Rory McIlroy watching the match from the stand, said: "It was a great experience coming here. Earlier today I went to the safari which was really fun. I got to feed the elephants.

"What impressed me most during this trip is a very warm welcome from the Thai tennis fans. That really impressed me the most and I hope I can come back to Thailand again," added Wozniacki who left for Sydney yesterday morning.

Meanwhile Paradorn, who hasn't played any competitive tennis for nearly five years, said: "I felt really tired today because I haven't played tennis at this level for a long time. But it felt great to have a chance to play again."

However Paradorn, 32, insisted he would not return to professional tennis adding that his priority now is coaching.

"I want to coach the young players and help train them for the Thai national team," he said.

World No.18 Isner said: "It's not an easy game against Paradorn. He quit tennis for several years but it seems he looks after himself very well."

The American also echoed the sentiments of Azarenka and Wozniacki, praising the Thai hospitality.

"I really had a good time here. I will stay in Thailand for a few more days and then go to Sydney to play in a warm-up tournament before the Australian Open."

Before the start of the match, all the players along with McIlroy donated 500,000 baht to help in the flood victims.

Isner and Azarenka yesterday gave some tips to some 30 lucky kids during a tennis clinic at the Centennial Park.

Both players took turn to show off their warm-up routines and basic techniques to the children who all clearly had the best of time.

Azarenka is due to fly off to Sydney this morning while Isner is scheduled to leave for the same destination on Thursday.
