Private ownership of 3-phase transformer.

Post by Han6 »

Hi,

I'm currently building a small development with couple of houses shared with my friend. When trying to get the electricity running we realized we'd need to get a transformer and faced the 260 000 pricetag for the machine (+ column and some cables & work).

We have been told many times that after we pay this the machine is ours, no-one else can connect to it without our permission. The column and the transformer are being placed on our land, inside our walls. Still I have my doubts about this as there is several other new building projects going up soon and some of those are owned by Thais… I'd be surprised if they don't find a way around and get connected for free while leaving us to pay the initial costs.

I have read here that if the transformer is placed on public land it will then be available for everyone after certain time period. In our case the machine is several meters inside our land behind our wall.

And about the price; We managed to push the price down from 360 000 to 260 000. It's still way too high and has at least 130 000 extra in it. I know the transformer itself (50kVA) would be less than 100 000 Baht bought from company near Bangkok but we heard that we'd face problems with the local electric authority if we tried to avoid paying for them for the work and machine and got it from private company instead.

I'd be grateful to hear if anyone has experience about this.

Welcome to Thailand; I paid 250k for exactly what it sounds like you are getting and it is now used by many homes, but I have no shortage of electricity so no problem so far.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

That sounds like what I have seen happening elsewhere too. Is the machine you paid for on your land or on public road?

I do not have any experience with private housing developments using their own transformer. But many commercial / industrial consumers are obliged to provide their own transformer, which is always located on their own property and for their own use.

It is a different scenario to having to contribute to a transformer that is installed outside of your private property, (probably because there is not enough capacity on any existing unit, or it does not exist), so I doubt very much that the PEA would be able to connect any other consumers to it.

Be aware that there is a 2% surcharge on your consumption using your own transformer.

Yeah, mine (well, the one I paid for) is on public property, I just happened to be the first house in the area that needed it so I had the privilege of paying the quarter million baht. If it is on private property, I doubt anyone else can use it.
