I'm shocked, shocked to find that riding buses is dangerous in poor countries. Jeeze, the things some so called journalists think are news. And they virtually always get the basic fact wrong. The train did not hit the truck. The truck hit the train. The train can't change it's path, it takes a mile to stop down and it always has the right of way.
The most important piece of safety equipment on a car or truck is the nut on the wheel. Until somebody invents a silent invisible train, the train, it's operators and the state of the crossing are never responsible for the collision. Its the drivers responsibility to verify that the track is clear and its safe to proceed. The pickup truck in question, driven by a 35 year old woman [who] jumped the queue clearly had a defective nut. I wonder if injuring 125 people means a one way ticket to eternal torment for her.

Yes, I feel really sorry for all those who were injured because of a human being which in my opinion, was no better than the worst soi digs one comes across. In fact, soi dogs are better since they are, after all, only dogs.
Now that I have that off my chest, I must also add that there are millions of Thais who don't behave so foolishly. Also, let's not forget the driver may have been in a huge hurry, and while it's no excuse, people in all countries tend to throw caution to the wind when they're in a hurry.
Let's just hope she's not from a wealthy family or else the train driver is going to take the flak for this.
On a slightly different note........ A couple of months back I was on my way back home after picking the kids up from school, when a white pickup carrying washing machines and etc. came speeding up behind me, and then stayed about a meter away from the back of me. He couldn't overtake for a while because of traffic, and then when he did get a gap, he was away like a bullet. I looked at my kids and said, "you see, that's an idiot, and he will have an accident very soon." A few kilometers further along, there he was with a badly smashed pickup and home appliances all over the road.
Hopefully his boss fired his ass instantly and pressed charges to recover losses.
Anyway......

Lets get real - when have you ever known a Thai to be in a huge hurry? And this lady was a Resort owner - no doubt quite wealthy. We will see what happens re the flak.
It would also be reasonable to assume that the victim was a little more sensible than many other Thais...
Regarding the campaign by the mothers of the UK students killed in the bus crash - I do wish them success in their campaign. BUT also recall the aftermath of the Phuket air crash. One UK based barrister tried to deal with Thai authorities in the subsequent enquiry, on behalf of all the British victims. He got nowhere. Other than establishing what he considered to be unnacceptable safety practices which led to pilot error. None of the airline officials or associated government officials would travel to the UK for the enquiry.
Another very minor incident - last week I used a Bangkok taxi from the city to Swampy. I'd used the guy a couple of times while in Bangkok and he seemed OK. Agreed a 500 bt fare (a bit high, but as I say he seemed OK.) Until he got his foot down on the expressway. 'Oh I safe driver' he said, before a very near miss scared he s..t out of me.
On arrival at Swampy he got his 500 and the cheeky twat just said 'oh - no tip?' Damn right no tip - but they just don't get it do they?

Today..New Years Day my thoughts go out to all the injured folk on that train.
Some may never work again, many will have their lives changed forever...
...all because of one stoopid woman who like so,so many others here will not obey the rules of the road,
nor adere to common sense..
I sincerely hope those passengers are able to recover Ok...Chock-Dee..
