10 minutes from Cha-am traffic light to the main Ta Yang lights on a good day

Yeah that's been about our experience 10 to 12mins or so from Cha am. Now I do drive 120 to 130kms so your driving speed will have an effect on time. Its a Brand New Tesco.

As for Isuzu is it before Soi 6, Toyota and Makro?
As far as Makro is concerned it hasn't yet achieved mediocrity!

The markets I speak of are about 5 or 8 mins or so past Makro(depends on driving speeds)

Yes, Market Village has got even worse as I had to go there last week and they've closed that carpark outside on the left which is the only place I ever used to park. They seem to be building something on it.

Is that what they're doing, It's nasty at the moment as even to get there on a bike you have to go into the underground carpark and out again. I only ever go there out of desperation to get things for the house from Homepro that I can't find anywhere else and it always seems so much effort to get in there just to buy one thing.

I totally agree with you Buksi. Apart from Makro being closer, I found the entire shopping experience more enjoyable. I know Easyas made reference to thr fruit and veg section, but to be honest, I thought Macro had far more on offer than Tesco, and most of it looked a lot fresher as well. They also carry an impressive range of spices and so on, which is great if you fancy making a few different meals from time to time. We found the staff helpful and polite.


Also, Easyas, it's Makro policy to not provide plastic bags, and quite frankly, I think other stores should be forced to follow their example.

They have all the stuff I like........deer meat, wild boar, ostrich, partridge, and even crocodile meat

We've been getting deer, ostrich and all other meats from Makro for a long time - generally very good quality and prices

Ostrich and Venison steaks + burgers are very popular with our customers.

That's quite interesting Terry. Out of curiosity............how do your staff prepare the steaks, since both can be incredibly tough. This is actually why I've never ordered this anywhere other than in South Africa.


I'm also curious as to where the ostrich meat comes from since I've never seen or heard of an ostrich farm in Thailand. Saying that, the last thing we need in Thailand are ostriches running wild all over the place.

Ther's an ostrich farm in Thailand, at least that's what it says on the packaging.

Thought the service non-existent and the staff rude.
Apparently according to a friend there were farangs in suits in abundance earlier in the day. No sign of them when we were there - perhaps they took any good training they might have dispensed away with them when they left!
Simple things - at the Service Counter "Do you have dog food? - ""Yes", vague point to furthest wall of shop. Couldn't find dog food, asked several Makro staff - answers ranged from "Don't know" to "Don't stock". Back to Service Counter - "No, we don't stock dog food" Later on I was talking to mÿ neighbour and she said "But they do stock cat food - I just bought some!"
Shelves and shelves of coffee, mostly unground - not a grinder in sight - compare that with Villa Market! Also not in sight "never heard of" filter papers for a drip filter coffee machine - compare that to either Villa Market or Tesco!
Grog same price as 7/11 - more variety of mixers stocked in that odd shop just by the railway crossing on Soi 6. Grog visiting hours also strictly interpreted (just as in Tesco, but NOT in Villa Market!).
Absolutely no help offered in packing items when leaving shop - even Tesco bags items for you and Villa goes further - they load them in your car for you! A well spent unasked for 20 baht!
I thought the vegetable section lamentable, with a very poor choice of bulk packaged items none too fresh looking. The bakery was ordinary. The only star of the show for me was the fresh fish section.
The Makro in Samui leaves this one for dead!
No, I'll stick with Villa Market and the odd foray into Tesco MV.

I have had a second visit and cannot disagree with you more.

The service centre was very helpful and polite and the choice, arrangement and low cost of goods so much better than Tesco or Villa Market.

This is a vast improvement for Hua Hin - Samui is irrelevant as we live here!

Some things are more expensive even when you buy in bulk packages. About half the things I normally shop for were close to the price I am used to at Hua Hin mall and Tesco. There were a few items that Makro had that I have been having trouble finding recently.
The seafood section was a treat as well as the variety of frozen foods.
Parking is a plus. Service hot and cold.
I will shop there from time to time in the future but I will still go to Hua Hin shopping mall and reluctantly Teso. I can't afford Villa Market.

It's good to know I'm not totally alone in sycophantic Hua Hin Makroland!
I never buy frozen food, so although the selection at Makro may well be exceptional that leaves me cold!
I've found (as have others I know) Villa Market is quite often cheaper than either Tesco and Makro Pranburi (presumably therefore Makro Hua Hin), with a much wider selection of fresh fruit and vegetables than either Tesco or Makro.
Parking is OK at Villa Market, too.
