Baby Foods and Sundries.

Post by kendo »

Hi Chaps,
I will be traveling to Hua Hin in March with my wife and 11 month old daughter, i was just wondering how many western branded baby foods are available i,e Heinz, Cow and Gate, Organics etc also other western sundries such as creams and nappies and where is the best place to shop for them.

I plan on bringing with me unopened containers of baby milk so we don't need to change brand, will this be o.k with the authority's.

I don't believe you can over look anything when traveling with an infant although she is eating cooked veg, fruit, fish, pasta etc we do use some jarred foods.

When we leave Hua Hin and travel up to our house near Prasat it's eleven hours north near the border, i can travel to Surin for western baby stuff but believe it will be far more limited there so think maybe should stock up from Hua Hin.

One last thing, those plug in mosquito thingy's are they really affective or just a bit gimmicky.

Thanks
Kendo.

You can even get Nappies in the 7/11 mate so that's not something you need to worry about, the Jok (Pot noodle style) is also a good emergency food for kids.

Tesco has a decent pharmacy and obviously your nappies, probably baby food too.

Never used the western style food so can't help, mines not 4 until March and already eats stuff as spicy as his mother.

The larger Tescos will have Heinz baby foods, and that's the only brand I've ever seen. I don't know if MV qualifies as a large Tesco. Perhaps someone can take a look and advise. You've got plenty of time. Pete

EDIT: Carrefour used to carry Heinz as well, actually a much larger selection than Tesco. I don't know if Big C has continued stocking it but worth checking.

Hi!
This is grandma speaking! We spent 3 weeks during Christmas in Hua Hin with two children, one 3,5 years old and the other 2,5 months. No problems with diapers, Market Village had a good selection of a lot of babystuff,f.ex.baby milk-powder at Tesco, as well as different bottles and other equipment.

Anti-mosquito cream which was very efficient and specialdesigned for babies/small children is available at a doctor. We also used a liquid of antihistamine, (to be swallowed)also prescribed by a doctor. Children from the western world can get rash and swollen skin on the mosqito-bites cause they havent been exposed to these kind of mosquitos before. The cream and anit-histamine will prevent infection from the babies scratcing. This was the reason we had to see a doctor at BKK-Hospital.Even if we used m.nets both day and night, we were mot able to avoid the insectbites.

We had a super holiday, and I highly recommend families with small children/babies to spend their holidays in Hua Hin! :P

Yes, as others have said, plenty of baby supplies here, and you might even find the same formula as you're using now. The old supermarket in the center of town also sell jars of baby food, although I'm not sure if they still stock it. As a side note.......have you ever tried making your jar style own baby foods? So much better than the stuff you buy and dead easy to make if you have a blender.

As BigBoy has said, those plug in mosquito things are excellent. We used to use the ones which take little mats and we wouldn't have a single mosquito in sight in the room. I've also see Johnson's Baby mosquito repellent cream for sale here at the old supermarket so I'm sure you'll be alright.

BTW Kendo.......I'll try to make it to the meet up, but I may not be able to make it this time.

Hi there,
Thank you for the advice, qestion did you have to make an appointment at BKK hospital to get the cream and Antihistamine or was it just a case of walk in and take a seat.
How much did you pay for the meds ?
My little girl will be 11 month old and i dont Know if to give her infant Malarone or just the cream we are regular visitors to Hua Hin but we also will be going 11 hours north east to Surin province to a very remote village near a jungle.

Hi Takiap,
Thanks for info yes we do use a lot of those silicon molds and the Mrs makes most of her foods.
I do two jobs and always rushing about and some times find it convenient to buy the jarred foods when my wife is working and i am doing daddy day care. :)

I will stock up in Hua Hin for our trip north although from my house we have a Big C Makro and Tesco Lotus 45 minutes away they have very limited stocks of farang foods last year i thought more and more farangs are taking the cheaper option and moving up to Issan there will be more farang stuff for sure but i was very disappointed that it's about the same as 5 years ago.

I have read on another forum that they have opened a Tesco Lotus in Prasat about 15 minuits away from my house but have been told it's no better than a Seven Eleven.

Those Plug in mossie things i guess they will sell them in Tesco market village so that will be my first port of call after checking in to our hotel, also i have a mossie net for the push chair but will be looking for a couple of full size ones have you seen them in Tesco's or anywhere else.

I hope you can make it to our little forum drink on the 10th will raise that thread closer to the time i think the numbers are about 10 so far with a few maybe's if back in time etc.

Kendo.
