We have friends coming over to visit us here in Thailand and they have applied to Hull to get a 90 day visa, which is fine.
The problem might be that the length of their stay is 92 days!
They do not want to do a visa run during their stay here, so do they have any other options?
I appreciate they could take their chances and pay the "overstay" fee, but does this have any impact on their ability to come back to Thailand in future?
Once again your help and advice would be appreciated
It would probably be worthwhile to go and have a word with Imm here. Strictly speaking, they shouldn't get an extension in these circumstances but if they take their flight tickets and say that the return was the earliest they could get, the officer might smile on them and grant a 7 day extension for 1,900 THB.
Failing that, although I don't normally encourage overstays, they will be OK paying the fine at the airport - don't be in a position where you have to produce your passport to an official before getting there. Fine is 500 THB each per day. The airport might let them off the first day.
They'll get an overstay stamp but it won't adversely affect any return or visa to Thailand.
90 day visa will be Non Imm O, unless tourist with extension (60+30 days).
You might find that they won't be allowed to leave the UK, if they have return tickets for 92 days and a visa valid for only 90. The airlines seem to be taking this more seriously these days from what I've heard. If they don't yet have the return leg of the ticket there wouldn't be such a problem.
If that isn't a problem then do as lomuamart says and ask for an extension BUT don't leave it until the last minute (don't go too early either) - if immigration refuse the extension you'll still need enough time to take the option of a quick drive to Ranong/Myanmar to get an extra 15 days (or Sadao/Malaysia if boating or communism isn't your thing).
As I said in my initial post, I don't want to encourage overstay as it's illegal. So, what nanyang says makes sense. However, if the friends opt to overstay 2 days then that fact won't interfere with any future return to Thailand.
Frank Hovis - the visitors will have visas. The fact that they're returning 2 days after their visa expires shouldn't be a worry. In fact, there's no need to even have a return flight as long as you have a visa of some sort - tourist/non Imm. The airline check-in staff are looking for those on the 30 day visa exempt entries. They must have proof of return or onward travel within those 30 days. If there's any problem at check-in , just ask to see a supervisor.
