A new concept in tires

Post by hhfarang »

A friend sent this to me and it looks pretty amazing. The photos below show a new concept in tires that was originally developed by a company called Resilient Tech for the military.

This should be the beginning of the end for balloon tires just like tubeless was the beginning of the end for inner-tubes on most vehicles.

Imagine, no more checking for the correct inflation level and no more flats! Michelin is now developing them for passenger cars and you should begin seeing them later this year.

That should surely through a wrench in police tactics on hi speed road chases. I'd imagine those tires would make spike belt's virtually useless?
Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'?

BMW now sells "run flat" tires on all it's cars, at least here in Thailand. I'm not sure who makes them but there are complaints everywhere that they destroy any sense of a smooth ride. I wonder how this new design will fare in that department? Pete

These tires DO defeat spike strips.

I'll be a set of four is pretty pricy. I would be interested in knowing what number is.

Not that much of a new concept it seems: -

Doesn't seem to have moved far in the past 7 odd years.

Yes, but spike belts are old fashioned and will no doubt soon be a thing of the past. I would imagine big brother will soon have the ability to remotely disable any vehicle they want, as can be done with some tracking systems already.

Besides, if the police really need to stop a car, what's wrong with a good old fashioned RPG?

The U.S. government is probably currently working with google on a way to do this and target ads to you on your car stereo while you wait for the police to arrive. :D

Can't find the link now, but read the other day of another concept, where the tyres are filled with gel instead of air? It made sense when I read it!

Run flats on sale at the moment have very stiff sidewalls that can be driven on so as not to damage the wheels and stay on the rim.
hence the reduction in ride comfort, I belive some of the new sports cars are using these as the side walls do not flex as much as normal tyres the nissan GTR i think uses these.
The gel can be put in any tyre and is suppossed to stop the air leak but AFAIK once you have a punchure you can not repair them so effectivly the tyre is buggered.
