Scammer baiting is a noble effort, indeed. An endeavour worthy of one’s time and labour.

Great reading, laughed out loud all morning. Thanks for the link!

The only problem with baiting them as I did on one occasion is that they don’t have a particularly well developed sense of humour.

They replied to me and included a rather nasty Virus, just as well that I keep my virus software up to date.

For the bait to have any chance of success be prepared to spend weeks reeling them in as well. You need to have a lot of time on your hands and the necessary dedication to get into that game.

I just don't think it's worth trying to get into the game with them. In the end they are nastier than you.

Here’s a new one doing the rounds in Thailand at the moment.

This morning someone called the company mobile number saying they were from the GSM network and that our number had been picked out and that we were the winners of a brand new Toyota Vigo Hilux. He said that the prize had been waiting for us to collect for over 1 month now and that our name and Tel no had been on all the advertising and media for this event. He said he would call us back to arrange for us to collect the prize.

When he called back he said that unfortunately, we would have to accept the cash alternative of 280,000 Baht as the prize has been returned to Toyota. He then went on to explain that he would transfer the money to our bank account. If we went to our bank he would arrange for the transfer to take place, if we could be outside the bank in 30 mins he would call back then.

I told my wife to be careful about passing bank details to anyone over the phone, I also advised her to call the GSM shop in market village to check out this promotion and prize.

Outside the bank the man called back, he asked some odd questions. How much do you have in your account,? Do you have any loans on your account? etc.. He then told her that he would transfer the money via the facilities on the ATM machine. She asked him to call her back as her ATM card was in the car.

The call to the GSM shop resulted in her being told that this is a scam three other people had been tricked in Hua Hin this last week.

Once on the ATM machine the process he leads you through results in him being able to transfer you funds.

When he called back the last time my wife had someone from inside the bank answer, when they identified themselves to the caller he immediately hung up.

The bank said this one is Chinese based, and has netted over 10 Million Baht in the last month alone.

scams

Post by redzonerocker »

yes,the scams have been around for many years now.
i've had similar ones to those mentioned here, gold, diamonds etc. problem is there are enough mugs out there that fall for them so they will continue.
on a smaller scale, one which surprised me recently was through ebay.
some guy bought a car for £5,000 (worth a lot more) & when he turned up to collect, no car.just a gang of thugs (foreign!) that beat him up & took the money.
my general opinion of it all is, you never get something for nothing.so when it sounds to good to be true, it usually is.
a fool & his money are easily parted, as they say.
