Midway, huh?

Well if we are going to play that way than what about Guam (west) and Puerto Rico (east and south)?

Guess,
Sorry to be a pedant but your question was
NOW to test your geography what are the most Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern States of the United States.
I got the southerly one wrong (although Florida has the most southerly point in mainland USA, in Key West) but without a doubt Maine is the most eastern state - your question was worded incorrectly if you wanted to know which hemispheres they were located in so
The Aluetian Islands in the Bering Sea are part of Alaska and some of them are in the Eastern Hemisphere.
That does not make them the most Eastern State as it is all relative - you might just as well say that Hawaii is more North than Alaska as if you travel north from Alaska and keep going you will eventually come to Hawaii!

If you want to be a pedant that get your facts right. My question was asked correctly. If you travel north from anywhere on Earth you will reach the North Pole. Journey over. You would never reach Hawii by travelling North from Alaska unless you continued in another direction when reaching the Pole. That direction would of course be South, the only direction you can travel from the North Pole. However you would have to take the correct line of longitude to get to your desire location in a straight line (or rather the shortest line following the curvature of the Earth sometime known by the misleading term "The Great Circle".

The Earth has been divided by man into segments with zero degrees passing through the Greenwich Maritime Centre and using the great circle route to join the North and South Poles. The Poles themselves were calculated to be the points where the Earth's axiis exited the planet.

The 180 degree line of longitude is exactly opposite the zero degree line.

The half of the surface of the sphere that is East of London is noted as so many degrees East. When the 180 degree line is reached the line numbers start to decrease and are known as so many degrees West. The Eastern portion is known as the Eastern Hemisphere and the Wester portion (surprise surprise) is know as the Wetern Hemisphere.

Some of the Aleutian Islands that are part of Alaska are in the Esatern hemisphere thus making Aslask the only US state in the Eastern hemisphere and there the most eastern state.

Of course it is all relative that is why the system was invented in the first place.

Now having explaind that one to death. Here is another.

Which US State Flag has the British Union Jack in the corner?

Again not a trick, it is one of the fifty states of the US.

The answer to that should be the Hawaii State Flag.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

I've been fretting about these posts on US geography for some time, and finally decided, based on exhaustive research, that the final answer is:

1. East -- Alaska
2. North -- Alaska
3. West -- Alaska
4. South -- Florida

Talking with business associates in HI, and the one Hawaiian in our office we found out that the smaller islands are part of the City and County of Honolulu; but that Midway is a trust terriotry.

http://www.fws.gov/realty/Midway.pdf

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midway_Atoll

The Aluetain Islands are part of Alaska and are both east and west of the 180 Meridian and therfore ARE the most easterly and westerly parts of the US.

According to Google Maps, Key West at the most southern point (I've been to the marker) at 24 deg-32-min-44sec North; while the tip of Texas is 25-52-40.

This together with the question of the Union Jack on a State flag should get me several beers from my trivia friends when I go to Washington DC tomorrow.

C'mooon fellas! It's been almost 24 hours and not a peep in a previously busy thread. Just when I get interested all the fun stops!

Was my quiz question too easy, too obvious, too difficult or just plain dull?

Not a trick question either.....

Funny people always answer something like that. The originla states would have burnt anything with Union Jack on it about 230 years ago.

Norseman is correct.

Errm. Well two Americans, a Norwegian, two mongrels, one West Ham supporter and a sweaty sock. I think most either did not make it to the finals or got knocked out probably by French Cheats or in one case in particular just plain incompitence.

And BTW for you information we are still in the World Cup and will win it unless Henry gets away with any more cheatring.

I T A L I A

Any Jaime I am confused, are you asking what the other US flag with a Union Jack on it is. If that is the case I am buggered. Could be West Pikeyland though.
