Re: History Challenge
It's WWII and the chimney is relevant to it's purpose.
Re: History Challenge
Was it some sort of emergency ww11 air shelter crematorium

Re: History Challenge
No, not a crematorium, it had a more defensive purpose.

Re: History Challenge
Is it a gun enplacement, and ammunition store, the brick wall is to prevent back blast. See a similar building in Rhodes in Greece, in the war it was defending an airfield.

Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.
Re: History Challenge
No, it did have a role in air defence but a bit more unusual than a gun emplacement.

Re: History Challenge
Was it a decoy to deceive enemy aircraft into thinking it was an industrial building?
This is the way
Re: History Challenge
Spot on DM, it is what was the control centre for a night time bombing decoy known as a QL site, this one at Moresby Moss. It contained a generator and switch gear to power arrays of lighting around the surrounding countryside that simulated nearby industrial works to attempt to lure bombers away from the real target, which in this case was a steel works. (Steel works were hard to completely blackout.)
Apparently farmers in the area were thoughtfully provided with free air raid shelters!

Here's a few pictures.
What are they?
Where are they? (there's some clues in the photos)
What connection do they have to the UK?

The first one is further away than IOW but about the same distance, maybe slightly closer, as Jersey (from the closest point respectively in the UK)
