SangSom, the Director's cut...

Post by dtaai-maai »

Has anybody else noticed the comparative scarcity of SangSom recently?

I thought it was ex-flood logistical problems or the Schweppes Syndrome, but no, just a marketing ploy apparently.

Ladies and Gentlemen, SangSom has returned to your shelves with a new description:
To the discerning connoisseur of fine rum, SangSom stands out with its unique taste, flavor and smoothness. Using a closely-guarded recipe, master distillers select the finest ingredients to produce a world-renowned rum, aged in oak casks to yield the richness and classic aroma that characterize SangSom
It also comes with a new price, so Mrs D-M tells me - 245 baht!

And while we're at it, apparently Gilbey's Vodka has gone up from 250 baht for 70 cl to 327...

Doomed, we're all doomed... :(

Kidding aside, the quote is word-for-word from the back of the bottle. The front of the bottle says "Special Rum". The price is for a 70cl bottle in the Shopping Mall today.

Yes D.M. my Mrs, even last week was explaining to me just what you've said here...
Sangsom goes out of production for 2 weeks+.
It comes back onto the shelves under a new name/banner.
Also a price-hike on each bottle.
(sounds a bit like a new company may be producing it now..??)

I'm curious as to why anyone would drink Sangsom when much better Caribbean rums are available here for a couple of hundred baht more. I don't drink a lot of rum but I want a good one when I do because it goes into a drink like a Mojito or Cachaca (which are mostly rum).

I guess if your hiding the taste in a glass of cola with lime (I don't drink it that way) or make a rum punch it doesn't matter what kind it is, or if you're drinking a high volume of it per month it saves money to go with Sangsom.

There I go again answering my own question!

or you prefer the taste...?

Though I don't really class it as a rum, it tastes nothing like a rum. It has a unique flavour (well I suppose not 'unique' as such - Hong Thong is pretty close!) which, when mixed with coke (as you say) and red bull is quite distinctive.

When I did drink rum and coke (in my unsophisticated youth :duck: ), I thought a dark or spiced rum was much better that the lighter variety like Sangsom, but as you say it has a unique flavo(u)r all its own, much like that of other Thai liquors. When I first came here I had a bottle in my bar for guests that I occasionally had a sip of and until someone told me I didn't even realize it was rum (sugar cane based liquor).

I've never tried to order a Mai Tai here. Perhaps they'll think you're saying Mai Thai and go and get a foreign bartender, or try to talk to you in English? :duck: Pete

Ah I do like a spiced rum and coke now you mention it. Dark rum and coke just tastes like cough syrup though; yugh!

Why is it that Mogan's Spiced (or as far as I'm aware, any spiced rum) can't be found here. Is it just lack of interest? They have Cptn Morgans, after all..

And is Sangsom suger cane based? I always thought it was rice based?

Actually I do get through a fair bit, I suppose!

I've become rather fond of a dollop of SangSom in my coffee as the sun goes down (you know, around 4-5 pm...). Otherwise, I invariably drink it with cola.

I've never really thought of it as a rum though.

Hua Hin being what it is, I find I drink Aquavit or Schnapps these days, on the odd occasion when a real snifter is called for. Swedish and Norwegian friends regularly bring over these little bottles of "essens" that can transform a bottle of cheap vodka into something wonderful!

But if anyone wants to really make my day, they can give me a bottle of Bush Mills...
