I sent an important legal document via EMS - never again! Sent on 10th December, promised 3 to 5 day delivery, arrived in Australia on 25th. Spent 12 days on holiday at Bangkok Airport. Completely stuffed up house sale due to take place on 16th.
:banghead:
Next time TNT! They offer same day pick up from home or office and a guaranteed 3 day delivery. I have their web address if anyone wants to PM me. Excedllent English and service.

I went to post a letter to the USA today.

2 choices--regular-- 2 weeks---I think it was 90b
express 5 days --- 600b
Quite a difference
Have peoople found the regular to be reliable.

Assuming that all post offices here work the same way, yes the "regular" is reliable. I've sent many things, latest was Christmas cards, regular airmail with the stated 2 week delivery time, and they all arrived in about 8-10 days. This was done from a rural countryside post office in Rayong province. Cost was about 38 Baht for each so don't know why they are quoting you 90 Baht, unless it is a weight factor. The 600 Baht choice is also reliable as send my tax documents that way. 5 days is about right and you get a tracking number. It's more or less an EMS service. Pete

I was under the impression that the Thai postal system was defunct now. :?

Is no one else having problems receiving mail. We simply haven't been getting any since the beginning of the flooding in Bangkok about four months ago. I no longer receive bills from TOT, 3BB, TrueVisions (or the magazine), etc. No telling what else we are missing. We used to get all our monthly bills in a bundle around the tenth of the month. In the last four months we've only received them once at all and that time they came around the first of the next month (after the bills were ten days overdue).

Luckily, being somewhat anal, I keep a spreadsheet of all our bills and the monthly due dates so we just take an older bill with the account number on it and go ahead and pay on time... but that means we can't just go into one bank and pay all the bills all at once. We have to drive all over town to the various individual company offices to pay each one. :cuss:

Just another thing to note it is not only the floods.
But also the time of year.

The PO is notoriously overworked over the holidays.
Thais send Pi Mai greeting cards.
Farangs send holiday cards.
A humongous amount of work.

But in Thailand if you are overworked it is not uncommon
for the carriers to throw it away. Hide it in the office.
Deliver it over the next month or so when I catch up.
Personal responsibility in not the strongest business trait here.

I would never send anything EMS in December or January.
Just asking for trouble.

Further to my last post I was looking at my credit cards and realized that one of my U.S. issued ones expired in November. I looked at my account online and had an urgent message to contact customer support as a new card was sent out in October and had not yet been activated... wonder who has that card now. :banghead:

And, it's tax time and I should be getting tax forms (W2's) from my three pension payers before I can file my taxes... those are probably in a heap in some Thai post office as well. :(

At the post office the morning to check our PO Box - empty of course, but there were boxes and sacks of mail all around the place with one person trying to sort it all out! Got a Christmas card last week that had been posted in November in the UK?

Never had any problems at all using parcel force from the Uk,

Only odd thing is if sent by lunchtime friday the parcel always arrives by the following tues/wed, if I send on the saturday then again arrives on tues/wed but a week later.

I assume they send once a week and must be at international hub by sat am, what I like is that I can track the parcel all the way to hua hin.

When sending to the US EMS has always gotten there in 3-5 days. Just sent 3 in past two weeks. Sent on Wed & Thursday and both arrived the following Monday. Tracking system online is interesting and appears to be accurate. Letters usually 2 weeks though one took 3+ weeks but they always get there. Surprising.

a 2 page fax to ems cost 60 baht (plus the cost of the ink for my printer to scan/print what they wanted to enhance the copy to fax, plus the cost of diesel to get to CAT to fax it)

I was stunned when he said he couldnt send someone over to collect and send it. I had assumed that that would be the obvious first step, and then get into the who did what, and how much should they pay in compensation (obviously the whole amount).
To be honest I think it is a plus that the parcel made it back to Thailand - the country of origin. It would be good to think that the Australian postal service would have had the decency to forward it on to Austria - but they would have had to foot the bill for that, and probably would have been liable (without your knowledge) for any further loss or delay.
And I really can't see why it should be collected from your home either. Maybe I've been hardened to the cold realities of post by the UK system though. Here if I am out and miss a parcel delivery I have to phone the sorting office (at my expense) and if I want the parcel re-directing to a Post Office where I can collect it I have to pay extra for that so called 'service.' In other words for the postage you pay initially there is only one bite at the cherry. Aternatively I can take a very long hike to the sorting office to collect it.
So the Thai postal service to me is still pretty good by comparison.
Granted - with EMS you expect a certain standard, and I would certainly expect all post delayed by the floods to have long been cleared. But as mojo has just said there is still a pile of sacks in the main HH post office. That - to me - indicates poor management, which I commented on last December in another thread. Possible problems with EMS staff at Swampy aside - HH post office is not what it used to be, and the Manager has changed. When the majority of counters are closed at peak time - over lunch - and the boss is personally dishing out those daft baskets of foodstuff at each counter (what are they all about?) there is something wrong.
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

Can any of the billing troubles be alleviated by online payments? I know you can get many US tax forms online but not likely a W2. Does TOT,3bb have online billpay? Perhaps any parcel out of the country could be sent directly to the recipient from EBay,Amazon etc. instead of buying and sending it from LOS.

We had a large envelope sent to us last Thursday from Bangsaphan by registered mail and was given the tracking number.. Checked tracking which showed delivered to us on Saturday but we definitively did not receive.

Come Tuesday, we sent staff to Hua Hin Post Office. Envelope was found pronto.
Staff asked how come it was not delivered? Response.. It has been raining ( We are located one block from the post office).
Staff then asked, would it have been delivered today.. Maybe.
Staff asked who can we complain to... Don't know.
Who is the manager.. Don't know.

We have a house in Huamark, Bangkok, and at least in the past 10 years, to my knowledge, have never once had a delivery problem (majority of the mail/packages coming from abroad).

I have griped on this Forum a number of times about the Hua Hin Post Office (Make a trip to the 2nd floor. A real eye opener). Have asked many time where to complain... and have never got a realistic response.. I think that it is about time that members in the community lodge a petition.
