Brussels sprouts

Post by dtaai-maai »

For any sprouts fans out there, Mrs D-M has just come back from HH Macro with a 1.2 kg pack of massive sprouts for 114 baht.
A similar weight in Villa would have been nearer 1,000 baht!!

Wouldn't like to be in the same room after you've eaten that lot.
Whatever you do don't light a match!

I love sprouts. May actually make a trip up there.
I'm yet to set foot, for buying purposes, in any supermarket in Thailand - Tesco, Macro, Villa etc etc. Have accompanied friends into them but never purchased.

That is an excellent price; in Villa they went up to 550 baht per kilo during the floods and have never gone down again. At the same time in Bangkok they were 220 per kilo in Tops. We actually bought some back from the UK with us in December where they were 50 baht per kilo!!! They did not have any last time we were in Makro but will try again tomorrow.

Have you ever stir fried brussel sprouts? I do them various ways. Just Google Stir fry Brussel Sprouts.
The biggest offensive against the "wonderful" sprout is to over cook it

Try this one for a change :)

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20-25 minutes

Ingredients:
12-15 Brussels sprouts
1 shallot(onion), diced thinly
2 tbsp roasted red pepper home
2 tbsp peanut garlic spice mix
salt as per taste
½ tsp red chilli powder
for seasoning
1 tsp cumin/jeera/jeelakara
1 tsp mustard seeds/rai/avaallu
2-3 dried red chillies, roughly torn into two pieces
3-4 curry leaves
2 tbsp olive oil

Method:
•Clean the brussels sprouts, remove any loose leaves and chop them into bite size.
•Heat oil in a large sauté pan, add all the ingredients under tempering list and fry for a minute. Turn heat to medium high, add diced shallots, hit some salt and this will sweat the shallots. Add roughly chopped roasted red pepper and diced brussels sprouts.
•Sauté on high for about 10 minutes, if required sprinkle some water and cook it till done.
•Lastly add the peanut garlic spice mix and cook for another two minute until it is mixed well.
•Serve with rotis or rice.

Enjoy :thumb:

I love sprouts myself but you gotta admit this thread has a comedy value for us Brits.

Here we are in sunny Thailand. Enjoying all the little things which made us move here.... but one thing we'll never forget - a good ol' English sprout!

There's just no reliable frost here in HH or I'd try and grow my own.

I could probably eat them if prepared along the lines of Siani's recipe above, but other than that, I'd pay to NOT have any on my plate. Strange really because my entire family loved them, whereas I think they are one of the worst tasting vegetables. In fact, I think only cucumber tastes worse. Cabbage is another one to be avoided at all costs, although I do eat it in Thai dishes.

BTW...........I think the OP was referring to frozen sprouts.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact

Often buy sprouts in Villa Market, and the trick is not to over cook.
10 -15 mins (dependant on size) in pre boiling water is all thats needed, providing that you "cross" the stalks first.
Have eaten sprouts at so called "top hotels" in BK and HH and none of the Chefs seem to know about crossing the stalks, so they always turn out overcooked and mushy. This realy spoils the meal.
