PHITSANULOK : Red shirt supporters are up in arms after a teacher asked students to write an essay about the controversial compensation package for victims of political unrest.
Led by Somchai Loipoon, the group submitted an open letter demanding the transfer of the teacher at Phutthachinnarat Pittaya School on the basis that he is politically biased, undemocratic and ethically impaired.
The unidentified teacher asked students to write whether they agreed or disagreed with the government awarding compensation to red shirts. He asked them to compare it with compensation awarded to troops in the deep South.
The essay was part of a three-part test on Thai writing for Matthayomsuksa 4 (Grade 10) students that uses political situations and articles critical of the government as material.
According to the red shirts, the teacher's selection of materials showed an intent to create hatred and divisiveness. They claim he adopted an inappropriate attitude and is not fit to teach.
They are demanding the school launch a disciplinary probe and transfer the teacher out of the area.
School director Decha Somboonpongkij said he had summoned the teacher for a rebuke and a warning.
He insisted the teacher had no intention to do harm and the test was designed to help students with analytical skills.
Mr Decha said the teacher is under stress.
The red shirts have also lodged a petition demanding an investigation with education authorities that oversee the school.
