PHITSANULOK : Red shirt supporters are up in arms after a teacher asked students to write an essay about the controversial compensation package for victims of political unrest.

Led by Somchai Loipoon, the group submitted an open letter demanding the transfer of the teacher at Phutthachinnarat Pittaya School on the basis that he is politically biased, undemocratic and ethically impaired.

The unidentified teacher asked students to write whether they agreed or disagreed with the government awarding compensation to red shirts. He asked them to compare it with compensation awarded to troops in the deep South.

The essay was part of a three-part test on Thai writing for Matthayomsuksa 4 (Grade 10) students that uses political situations and articles critical of the government as material.

According to the red shirts, the teacher's selection of materials showed an intent to create hatred and divisiveness. They claim he adopted an inappropriate attitude and is not fit to teach.

They are demanding the school launch a disciplinary probe and transfer the teacher out of the area.

School director Decha Somboonpongkij said he had summoned the teacher for a rebuke and a warning.

He insisted the teacher had no intention to do harm and the test was designed to help students with analytical skills.

Mr Decha said the teacher is under stress.

The red shirts have also lodged a petition demanding an investigation with education authorities that oversee the school.

Just read the same article and was wondering: is it Nazi Germany or Communist Russia that comes to my mind from this?

Phua Thai over time better distance themselves from that hardcore group. They are the Communist Party in all but name, and fence sitting, moderate supporters of Phua Thai will turn on them like rabid dogs if the entire party goes hardcore....IMO. Beware Yingluck and Brother T. Pete

Yes, the belligerence of this section of the 'Red Shirts' is breath taking really and they truly believe they have carte blanche to do whatever they want. The government needs to distance itself from them and have them reigned in.

I'd consider them one and the same, the reds are responsible for putting Pua Thai into power and PT are a pack of cronies and sycophants of the Shinawatra family (which will soon own this country once the constitution is changed in their favour).

The government can't/won't reign them in, hence the reason why I've said in the past that Thailand actually still needs an "all powerful" military. I know the vast majority of readers don't agree, but that's just the way I see it. No other political party can compete simply because there are more voter's in PT strongholds. It's the same scenario in South Africa. The ANC will rule for generations to come simply because all races are greatly outnumbered by the blacks, and the blacks there will not even consider voting for anyone other than a black, irrespective of what the outcome is. The rural Thais will vote for PT no matter what, so in essence, no other party can ever rule, at least not for the foreseeable future.

The reds state they're opposed to dictatorship, and yet they complain about a school teacher giving students a perfectly reasonable subject to write about. The reds are nothing but a communist party in the making - a bunch of freeloaders.

Will PT be told what to do by the reds? Some how I doubt it. After all, PT leadership are all "Bangkok Elites" as well........lol. I can't see Thaksin ever sharing any of his wealth with the hard done by rural folk.

As for changing the constitution.....................why bother, because the next government will just change it again, and so on, and so on, and so on.

Why bring politics into a school test of Thai writing in the first place?

But perhaps other political parties should put more effort into trying to compete instead of waiting for the military to put them back into power every few years.

My God - a teacher trying to teach analytical skills in Thailand . What will they think of next? See what happens when you don't follow the script and the audacity of debating the highly entrenched compensation mentality - the horror!
