Thai Style guesthouse

Post by johnrxx99 »

My first post. Good day.

Hoping to visit HH towards September. I like Thai'ness and was wondering if it is possible to find down to earth Thai questhouses with local food?

If so can you give me a few names.

Many thanks, John

Welcome to the board,
Pattana Guesthouse is a Thai style place and Baan Nilawan is a Thai managed guesthouse.

Fulay Hotel(was called fulay guesthouse in the 90s) is right in the middle of the tourist area of HH just down the street from Hilton. It is thai owned and managed with a very good restaurant on the ground floor. Book early as they are often full up.

For a little romantic boutique hotel on the beach(although 18 km from city centre) check out Casa Papaya's web site....again owned and operated by the thai owners. Good thai food is can be found in either direction on the beach or the nearby village of baan kwai.

Excellent leads guys. I'd spotted Pattana on the site's excellent map. I'll look into the others.

I've had my email to Fulay returned saying their inbox is full. Are they still operating or could they be closed?

It took the Fulay a week to get back to me - be patient ! They only look good of you are prepared to pay for the most expensive room.

The Pattana is VERY Thai style (though when we stayed there the owner was Dutch ... may have changed), VERY reasonable. Excellent breakfasts are served in a sweet little outdoor garden, and it is NOT ncluded with the room cost.
One proviso ... if you have a heart problem and feel like jumping into the shower, do so with great caution. Cold water showers only!
The rooms are very small ... but then so is the price. Easy walking to everywhere.

Same same for Casa Papaya. Not a "guesthouse" really but a small group of individual bungalows directly on a very quiet beach. Cha Am is about 5K away . . . give yourself time and walk up there along the beach: lots of massage places and small restaurants on the sand for a rest or a drink.

Caaa Papaya is teriffic. Very friendly yet very unobtrusive if you like quiet privacy. When we stayed there last April 90% of the rooms were populated by Thai people (it was school holidays). The dining facilities are just OK (breakfast is fine) but there's lots of good food to be had by walking either north or south alon the beach.

Accomodations are clean, roomy, and terrific bathrooms. Each room has a private balcony.
Quite a bit more pricey than Pattana.

This is the view looking through the pool area out to the Gulf of Thailand. Beautiful and totally tranquill at 6:00am at the Casa Papaya.

Cheers ...

I stayed at Pattana and enjoyed it.
The garden is lovely, perfect for morning coffee with different areas to sit.
Arno, a Dutch guy runs it and he is helpful and enjoyable to talk to pretty well any time.
I think the 2nd floor rooms are really nice. They are brighter than ground floor which can be a bit dark because it is an enclosed garden. Unfortunately the 2nd floor rooms require that you leave the room to shower.
Very reasonably priced considering the location is excellent, close to the beach and walk to all shops and services. Arno provides a key to the private, gated garden because it is locked after 11pm which is a nice security feature.
