Small diesels

At 88 mpg, a car of that type would be good as a general runabout for taking kids to school and all that kind of thing.

whats the fuel price differental 'diesel to petrol' in Thailand? Thats part of the payback equation?

Diesel is about 32B/litre, 95 RON Benzene is about 41B.
Ethanol mixes are between the two except for E85 which is about 24B.
NGV is still less than 10 Baht.

There are very few countries where Diesel is more expensive than Benzene but the UK is one of them, so except for extra servicing costs, and I think modern diesels now have service intervals close to their benzene equivalents, there is no real cost downside to diesel.

I have a Golf 2.0 L turbo diesel.
I am more than happy with performance and economy despite the bigger motor. I might downsize the diesel motor next time I buy. Turbos are no good for continual short haul slow trips as the turbo needs to blow freely and clear the particulates.
