One of the most dissapointing times in my life...........

I was in Beijing on business in 1994 and had one day spare
So
I decided to take a day trip to 'The Great Wall'
I went to a place called Badeling (Spelling)

Two great dissapointments
1) The wall at that location has been completely rebuilt for the tourist trade and is therefore about as authentic as KFC mashed potato
2) There was a branch of KFC there, where you could buy the mush............. :banghead:

It's spelt "Colonnada" on the 'official' blue sign just south of the main traffic lights...

As HHF said - that was a branch of Hotpot! I didn't care for that either! :D

In fairness, MK at least, do some very edible grub without having to resort to the dishwater!

As for KFC, will this affect the outlet at MV (or has that shut)?

Unsure if this is good or bad news. I think there was an article about how KFC was failing in Thailand due to the fact they were using Thai chickens and potatoes and really were heading for the pooper till they started importing USA chickens and spuds. Not sure if this is still the case. Just remember the story. I my self am not a big fan.

I think that may have been nothing but a rumor since KFC have always used broiler chickens, and trust me, broilers are broilers no matter where they are raised. In fact, if you take a look at Thailand's broiler farms, you be amazed to see how high the standards are, and certainly a lot higher than some of the facilities I've seen in the west.

Thai chickens, if you're referring to the common chickens we see running around everywhere, would never be used by KFC or any similar sort of venue since they are not well suited for frying, and besides, they also cost more than regular chicken.

As for KFC.................I'm not a great lover of KFC, but I certainly prefer it to McD or BK. Then again, I'm from South Africa, and of course it's one of the few, if not the only country in which McD has failed.

I might be wrong, but my guess is KFC is more successful in Thailand than BK and McD, since you'll even find KFC in the non touristy areas, usually where there's a Tesco and etc.

When I was working in China I was on the site for a new wafer fab. plant in Tianjin and once a month the client would, as a treat, provide lunch for all of the non-manual workforce, which was several hundred strong and predominantly Chinese in nature, as a result of which the food served up every month was without fail either KFC or McD, which for God only knows whatever reason, the Chinese loved.

Having said that when I worked in Rome I was pretty gobsmacked at the number of KFC outlets in that city also and every weekend you could walk into any one in downtown Rome and they would be heaving, very weird considering that Italians, very mistakenly IMHO, believe they make the best food in the world :tsk:

Thanks BB, guess I'm going to need to take a crash course in Thai though, to get anything out of that website :munch:

Me too, but then I am originally from Tennessee, so I grew up on fried chicken... :D
And me. I know it's junk food/unhealthy etc, but honestly speaking original chicken and fries is one of the tastiest meals I will eat in my regular 'week-in, week-out' diet. I really don't like their dry, white chunky meat (breast!?), it's always the greasy darker meat and that soft greasy skin. Garlic scallops, penang chicken curry or a UK chicken korma curry are the only dishes that taste better to me

KFC seems massively popular with Thais too, I always see about an 80-20 split of Thais over farangs in KFC in MV, whereas McD's & BK seems to always be majority farang.

The chicken used by all Chain Chicken Restaurants is manufactured...eggs are hatched in a hatchery, chicks are separated by sex and fed a prescribed diet (they grow at different rates). To produce a "yellow skin" marigold petals are ground in with the feed, usually corn and some by products of chickens, etc. This is usually more expensive but Purdue Farms in the USA uses this and markets it as "better." Male chickens are grown 58 days and females 60 days to achieve an average weight of 2.25 to 2.5 pounds each. So regardless of where the chickens come from, they are a highly refined breed raised for the sole purpose of reaching a specific weight with low fat. Free range chickens have a more natural or wild flavor as they eat a more varied diet. (worms and bugs) I spent many years developing chicken franchise restaurants in the USA so there goes the history of knowledge. I hope you found it entertaining.

I know this chap that has some Barnevelda chickens, these bad girls are three times the size of your avarage pathetic looking thai chicken thier is a German guy in Buriram that breeds them.

KFC in Hua Hin will be expensive and i think the chicken and fries fast food idea will be duplicated.

Hua Hin Colonade formerly known as Hua Hin Nadpob Market gets a KFC branch there right next to MK Suki? Well I hope that drop dead place gets rejuvenated by these 2 Anchors and wakes up as an Food Court for International Cuisine as that place was so dead nobody hardly ventured inside. And those few Shops that opened and trying to sell their stuff wanted to get out but with nowhere else to go are stuck with rents to pay.
To be honest I was seriously considering opening a German Bakery & Restaurant oveurthere @ the Colonade. But after my last visit I became dismayed and asked my friend to delay his move to Thailand until I found us a suitable place to set up a Bakery & Restaurant!
