Re: The Android Thread

Post by Big Boy »

I've been away all weekend, and forgot to take my 3G stick for my laptop  . I was really grateful for the phone, and was well impressed with it's performance, even though the screens were a little small. and hitting the right spot with my hammer fingers did take me to the wrong links occasionally.

I was very careful to only go into sites that I trust. Even so, I was very conscious that I was unprotected. Are there any recommendations for what I need - virus guard, firewall etc. Free is good, but I'd hate to compromise my new toy for the sake of a few quid. This forum has always been sound when recommending such freebie products to protect my laptop - I'm hoping the same is available for this phone.

Just one other question for now (curiosity, more than anything else). When I've been accessing Internet away from a wi-fi connection, a 3G symbol has often been displayed. However, occasionally the symbol changed to a H. I didn't notice any difference in performance. I understand 3G, but what does the H mean please?

H is High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), it's a slightly faster 3G.

I use Avast BB, it's free.

Doubt that will work on an Android phone.

Avast offers free mobile security:

I came across this in a magazine yesterday: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/sony-smartwa ... p33781.htm
It's a watch that you can use to control an Android phone by Bluetooth which might be good for gadget fanatics.

Really.

Hacking smart-phones that contain personal data will overtake scripting and writing malware to get into Windoze systems very soon. They are a massive security risk due to the open source nature of the OS and especially the apps that run on them, there have already been several viral apps for Android and many more to come. An OS on a phone is still a relatively new concept and people are "click happy" with them.

My advice is not to keep anything personal on them ... but then they wouldn't be very 'smart' phones would they!?

Just don't download any app that sounds too good to be true. If it sounds great but has no reviews then just wait a few days. It'll either be filled with good reviews or have been pulled from the market place...

So that I can advise my new phone number to friends in the UK before I leave, I'd like my daughter to get my new Sim Card now. What is the best deal to give me unlimited access for a Samsung Galaxy SII please? Keep it simple as I need to pass the information to somebody else (blind leading the blind doesn't even come into it).

Good luck with that BB, if I tried to organise that over the phone I'd probably end up with a pack of 52 cards and two Jokers!

This is a tough one BB. What you really need to get is a post paid account with monthly billing so you don't have to top up all the time, and you won't be able to do that until you get here and sit down with one of the Big 3 and decide what you want. I would say for her to get any Sim at all from any one of them and then when you arrive you go in and convert it over to a post paid with the package you want. However, and it's a big however, I don't know if a phone number from a prepaid account can be moved over to a post paid account? You may find that you have to start all over again with a new number anyway. Sorry can't be more helpful. The wife has unlimited calling (within Thailand) and unlimited internet with DTAC for 700 Baht per month on a post paid account. I'm sure AIS and TRUE offer similar and around the same price. ......correction to the above. Her package is unlimited internet but 350 hours per month for calling, for 699 per month. Pete  http://www.dtac.co.th/2009/eng/package/smartphone.html
