I found the Visa application straightforward. Having applied and been successful first of all for a tourist visa February 2011 for my wife to visit, and stay 6 months in the UK, I found the waiting to hear the worst. 6 weeks before she was due to return we applied for a tourist visa for her younger sister, the wait this time was not as bad.
Her sister got the visa spent the last 2 weeks here in the UK with us before all returning to Thailand.
December 2011, I applied for a settlement visa for my wife, the wait being a lot longer this time, but early March the visa was issued.

Just supply lots of info, pictures, Skype, msn, emails. Be honest and take your time.

To be honest, you will get all the help you need on here, I see know need to go though an agent. On each occasion applying my wife and her sister attended the initial appointment to hand in the hard copy and payment. And know further interview held.

Good luck.

I read that it's now more diffficult to obtain a tourist visa for the UK so maybe because you were already married it was easier ?

The important requirement that any good visa agent should emphasise for a tourist visa is to provide enough evidence that the applicant is not likely to overstay but has reasons to return.
