Hello and Howdy
Hi,
I am joining this forum to learn more about Hua Hin.
This is my story:
I am a 44 year old financial analyst working for the City of Houston. At 52, I can leave my employer begin to receive a pension. Recently, I vacationed in the cities of Bangkok, Krabi Town, and Chiang Mai. Since this visit, I have been doing research on Thai visa about Chiang Mai and Bangkok regarding ex-pat life and the cost-of living in each city.
Hua Hin came on my radar when I read "Travelers' Tales Thailand: True Stories". Then, i visited websites such as tripadvisor and flickr to get a visual introduction to the area and its natural beauty. And now, I am leaning towards making Hua Hin my future home. So, I intend to read and occassionally participate in this forum so that I can be more convinced when I make this decision as I near retirement. I do plan to visit Thailand once a year until I am ready to leave the States in 7 or 8 years. So, in January 2013, I will visit Hua Hin for the first time.
So, I hope that you all can help me answer the many questions that I have about Hua Hin. Here in Texas, we say y'all. And so in closing, I would like to say...

Welcome! Coming from Houston, you'll probably love the climate in Hua Hin! Houston is one of the few places I've been that were actually hotter and more humid than Thailand.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Thank you Siani, kendo, and traveller2. Just knowing that Hua Hin forum members are greeting me with open arms is really great. The topic of living on 1,000 per day on this site was extremely informative. Will be reading the North of Hua Hin and South of Hua Hin today.

Well JA..my personal view of this l'il town is that it's like 'Hotel California'..you check-out, but you never leave.
A customer said to me the other night "Ya know this town has an 'island feel' to it..you got the beach, yet even tho' it does not wrap around the town, I get the feel of an 'island community' here"
So there ya go..there's two takes on this place..

Usual suspect, Hotel California is one of my favorite songs. Definitely looking to settle down in a relaxed island community. Also, hoping to improve my health by breathing in the clean ocean air, taking walks along the beach, and dining on fresh grilled seafood. Just hope to have the ability to watch National Football League games, National Basketball Association games, and Major League Soccer matches at the local bar or pub. But, if these bars show any sports teams from Houston, Texas, USA, then that would be a special bonus for me.

As of last year the local satellite network, Truevisions removed the station from their line up that showed those so I don't know if you will be able to do that. We didn't even get the Superbowl here this year on normal satellite or cable for the first time in the eight years I've been here.Just hope to have the ability to watch National Football League games, National Basketball Association games
Soccer will be no problem. There's about eight channels that seem to be all soccer all the time, but you better learn to call it football or these UK and European folks may give you a hard time...

Re: Hello and Howdy
My compliments to the forum moderators and contributors. There is a lot of useful information in this forum including sports activities, restaurants, a Thai women matrix, and soi dogs. I especially like the advice on what to be aware of when living in Thailand. With only three weeks on vacation, I could not even appreciate the unique situations of someone living in Thailand for the majority of time. I myself almost fell for the tourist scam of a tuktuk driver taking me to a shopping market instead of Wat Po in Bangkok.
