Does anyone out there have any experience of flat screen TVs ?
I am considering buying one sometime in the relatively near future. Not a huge one just a normal size one.
Now the question is what is the practical difference between LCD and Plasma screens ?? They are similar prices (Here in UK anyway) but which is better regarding picture and reliability ??
Any information/opinions would be welcomed.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
Which ever one you buy, the picture quality will be poor due to the quality of reception from UBC.
I wish I hadn't bothered getting one, friends same same.
Burger is right and given that, I would go for the LCD here if I had to do it over again. They are considerably less expensive than the plasma. I have a 42" panasonic plasma and it lets off a lot of heat plus, it's heavy as hell to move around. I think the LCD's are much lighter but not sure. I guess the plasma weight could be a theft deterrent, at least that makes me feel good...LOL. Of the name brand manufacturers, Samsung here seems to have the best range of LCD's at good prices. There are some "no names", probably made in China that are very cheap but unknown reliability. Pete
Not sure on the life expectancy of LCD TV’s over plasma but I do know the LCD will give you a better quality picture, wider viewing angle and very importantly good reliability.
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.
LCD! Better quality in pic, better tech, I mean, They're starting to put LCDs everywhere. I got a 32" LG Lcd and it beats the hell out ot my friends' 42" plasmas in quality and viewing angles... smaller though. I bought it year ago, now I could have a 37" lcd for the same price... but...

Depends on how long you watch the Plasma, if it is on constantly, then it could need re-gassing after a few yrs, but if you are only watching it a couple of hours a day, then ten/twelve yrs.

I went into this about one year ago so much may have happened since.
It started after an argument with a German guy who told me that Plasma was finished and the older TFT (LCD) had overtaken Plasma in quality and was cheaper. I told him he was talking bollocks and did some research the next day. I discovered that the bolocks was not so exagerated as I had thought.
At the time the price and reliability were similar. MTBF (mean time between failures) has reached such a high level that manufacturers of both technologies can offer five year warranties wit little or no risk.
The overall outcome of the research is that is is a case of horses for courses.
LCD is much better for displaying data and therefore will probably never be replaced in PC market place by Plasma. Many software developers, including MicroSoft have spent vast sums on engineering type faces that are easy to read on LCD.
As for Video, the Plasma screens came out better and have a faster response to movement than LCD. When it comes to high speed movement like in gaming the CRT still comes out top.
As there is little difference I would expect the manufacturers to put more R & D dollars into TFT other LCD advancements like SFT which has no angle issues associated with it. At the moment though using a single plane for all three colors is expensive and response times are slower.
