Are looking for a translation of the UK Birth Certificate into Thai, or are you looking to obtain a Thai Birth Certificate? If the later, I have recently been through that nausea, and can advise.

Firstly, our reasons for doing it: We were about to emigrate to Thailand, and our 21 year old son decided that he would like to come as well. As we all know, there is not much scope in Thailand for a 21 year old foreigner to live full time e.g.:

- He would constantly need visas, and would probably have to leave the country regularly.
- He would need to obtain a work permit to be able to work.
- The amount of job opportunities are significantly reduced for a non-Thai.
- I could go on, but for anybody moving here full time, a bit of nausea at the beginning will eliminate a lot of problems in the future.

On the downside, he becomes eligible for Thai National Service. However, we've already been approached for a donation, which would release him from that requirement. The jury is still out on that one because he quite fancies the fitness side of National Service.

The process:

- You need to send a copy of his UK birth certificate (probably best to obtain a certified copy because the Thai government will retain it at the end of the process. A copy costs about £10 and can be done online) to the Legalisation Office, UK FCO. This is an online process http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/what- ... alisation/ and cost £30. You have to fill in the on-line form, and pay the fee. You receive a reference number, which you must include with Birth Certificate when you send it. Basically the FCO will put a stamp on the back of the Birth Certificate confirming that it is real.

- When you have the 'legalised' Birth Certificate back, you need to complete forms as per this web page http://www.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/?q=node/191 and attend the Thai Embassy in person. The Thai Birth Certificate will cost £10.

Of course, the above process is only the start. To obtain a Thai ID card using the Thai Birth Certificate is a completely different ball game, which I can also advise on the process ........... but believe me, it doesn't get easier.

Hi, I have just been enquiring about at the Thai Embassy London about Thai birth certificate and Thai Passport for my infant. I was told I would need both of these and they would need to be acquired before departing the UK to settle in Thailand.
With reference to the passport, they said my son would depart England on his UK passport and enter Thailand on his Thai passport.

Also was not possible to get a Thai passport with out a Thai birth certificate.

I guess then, the Ops son has a visa, if this is possible I would be interested for more info.

I am a little confused. Is it possible to get a Thai birth certificate for a child born outside of Thailand?

ken,

Your circumstances are a little different to those described by me above because your son is still an infant - my son was 21. Because my son had passed ID Card age, a passport could not be issued. He actually had to travel to Thailand on a Certificate of Identity issued by the Thai Embassy.

I'm not quite sure about your statement "depart England on his UK passport." I'm assuming that you will be travelling on a one-way ticket in the same way that we did. The rules say that travel to Thailand on a one-way ticket using a UK passport is not allowed without a valid visa for entry to Thailand. You would need to check with airline, because it is they who decide whether to carry you. See this recent thread viewtopic.php?f=7&t=20440 . I also did a follow-up report (first post only before richard hijacked the thread) viewtopic.php?f=7&t=20487 .

Re Thai Birth Certificate.. as we know every Embassy/Consulate seem to have their own rules. I am personally aware of a Thai mother applying for a Thai passport for her son (born in USA) at the Consulate in Los Angeles and all that she had to produce was her Thai ID/Thai Passport/and her son's US birth certificate... she was told to arrange Thai birth certificate and ID for the son when the arrived in Thailand.

Hi Big Boy, and thanks,

I did not mention to the Thai embassy about having only 1 way tickets.
But it should not be a problem as, at time of travel Josh will hold both Thai & and U.K passports.

Hope your now settled in and enjoying your days in LOL.

Ken.
