Coals to Newcastle
Hi
About to embark on my first trip to Thailand/Hua Hin next week and having read dozens of reports about the place just cant wait to see it for myself. I have picked up loads of good tips from the forum, so thanks to everbody who takes the time and trouble to post. Only one "problem"....I will be bringing the wife and it seems most of the night life is geared to single blokes. Are there any bars that have a bit of life but where I can take the missus and just have a few beers without feeling too out of place? (Staying at the Hilton). Thanks.

There are plenty pubs and restaurants you can enjoy yourself. One of these pubs is Jungle Juice which is a nice friendly place where Richard (the landlord) will give you a warm welcome.
The best bet is to walk around with your wife passing by all the bars and you can look in them all to see which one she fancys going in to They all have an open outlook on to the road.
Meet Wij at the London Lounge, Eddy in the Ship and you can visit Glen & Johnny at Johnny Walkers sports bar and don't forget Porn (her name) at the P&P bar. All these bars (as well as most others) are friendly, are not frequented by sex-crazed guys and the Thai girls will love talking to your wife. Many ferang woman enjoy these bars - they are not seedy.
I recommend you take a 5 minute taxi ride on a took took to visit Rockestra (great music & food)
I'm sure both you and your wife will have a great time. Good luck.

Couples/families
I agree with Jockey, especially about the London Lounge.I went there every night I was in Hua Hin.Most nights I saw couples, families.Wij is an excellent host, and a demon pool player.Watch out when the going gets tough,he brings out his own cue!!!!(serious or what!!!).

Jazz at the Dusit, Thai country at Blue Station
I'd recommend you get over to the Dusit (just past the airport, on the way to Cha-Am) one evening to take in the only actual jazz in the area. A good piano trio (all Thai).
Also, for an exotic night out try the Blue Station, a block off the night market near the bus station. Thai country music (drink beer until you don't care that you don't understand the lyrics). From 9:30-11:00 it's semi-acoustic, after which the electric band takes over. (They rock). Good chance you'll be the only farang there, but that's a good thing.

I took a group of Thais, men and women to Blue Station,i was the only farang present, half way through the evening a glass was thrown across the room at our table,it smashed and cut one of the ladies on the neck, she made very little fuss about it,but all the people i took stood up,and pushed me behind them,i got the distinct impression that they felt the glass was thrown for no other reason than the fact i am a farang.we stayed for a while then a fight broke out, which spilled outside,a couple of minutes later the police arrived,we decided that was a good time to leave.
I had not been drinking, just sat quietly enjoying the music, and the people i took are all friends that work in a restruant in Hua Hin,some middle aged,so we was not a noisy group of youngsters looking for trouble.
Having had this experience i felt i had to post it,before anyone took their wife there thinking it was a safe place.
It is the only place i have ever had trouble in Thailand.

Hey dont get caught out here mate, if you are staying at the Hilton then you will not like the Bindebahn Soi, its where all the prostitute bars are, go to Rockestre and have a good time. Get a copy of the observer where quite a few decent places are advertised.
If you are with your partner then why go to where hookers hang, also the Hilton has a good bar with live music adjascent to it.
If you are indeed looking for a good time stay away from Cha Am, its where all the losers live, no night life, zero.
Hookers are hookers are hookers.
