There are sheep in Thailand, but not many it would seem. My missus took the kids to a sheep "petting farm" just a month or so ago. The minute she got back I asked how much mutton she bought but was informed the sheep are only for petting. As far as I can remember, the place was just north of Bangkok.

We went there a couple of weeks ago (it's the location described by Roel above).

It was, well, pretty underwhelming. There were sheep there, but no black ones
Though there were a few white ones with black markings.

There are also some cute rabbits there and some deer. They also have a coffee shop.

It's obviously in its early stages - but there wasn't much to do to be honest.

We were in and out in half an hour - and that included coffee!

Ok guys, here's the info from the sheep mouth:

Black Sheep Farm opened two months ago with the primary purpose of providing a place to go in the Hua Hin area for young families with kids where they can have a little fun in the country visiting a farm with numerous livestock, in the shade and cool of an old mango plantation. We are not a wayside attraction appended to a floating market!

Something for kids that is sorely lacking in Hua Hin – and Barry (with respect) Black Sheep Farm not exactly designed for slightly jaded middle aged farangs who have seen plenty of domestic and wild life in their time. To each his own, but a little objectivity here, please.

We charge next to nothing (small kids are free, older kids are 10 baht and adults are just 20 baht) and in the two months we have been open many of the more than 8,000 visitors that have stopped by have personally told us how much they have enjoyed the unique experience and many went to the trouble of telling us so in our Facebook, as you can see. We have yet to advertise, so the growth in attendance, from a handful at opening day to the now more than 500 that come on weekends, is a word of mouth testament to having done a pretty good job of meeting a worthwhile need. Clearly Thai and Asian families and their kids, as well as Europeans with kids, love the experience and get enjoyment from it.

Two months is not enough time to get everything up and running at once and we are actively engaged in increasing the number of activities in the next few months. You may have noted that most of the last month we have been subjected to heavy rain, so progress is not always easy.

At present we have more than 15 sheep of varying breeds, 5 rambunctious goats, three deer and an ever increasing quantity of bunnies. Almost all the animals are pregnant – other than our two prize rams, of course, and the male black sheep that was born on the day we opened – at the exact conclusion of the Watt Huay Mongkol Abbot's convocation. Very shortly our 'flock' will be fairly substantial and we will open up the balance of our 15 rai for further use and activities.

In addition to the livestock, families can enjoy our 'Fun Field' which is equipped with kids swings, slide, play vehicles and a large trampoline, and is a backdrop for a number of fun photo opportunities. Our water gardens are intended to allow for a little tranquility and the public is encouraged to use our extensive pool.

Further activities are in progress or being planned including a working experimental Aquaponic fish/vegetable farm, where our fish ponds provide the nutrients for growing vegetables hydroponically – fully interactive and available for organic vegetable sale to visitors. Similarly we are in progress of installing experimental grape vines for the production of table grapes. Clearly these are not only fun for kids to see and understand but also intended as educational tools for many kids that rarely get out of the city.

We have a unique and sensation site perched high overlooking a major klong with more than 500 mature mango trees that keep it shaded and cool. In the future we will be responding to the demand for some resort housing for the many visitors who have expressed a desire to stay – with an accompanying restaurant where Siriwan, my wife, can practice her accomplished culinary skills. Try one of her lamb burgers (NZ - not ours) now available at the Black Sheep Cafe.

Finally, as you may know, fully BLACK sheep are a rarity – particularly in Thailand. At best black sheep are usually black faced but with substantially white body hair. Short haired fully black sheep are particularly rare – we have but one we can truly so claim – and indeed many are black with white markings (and, yes, white with black markings). We love them either way – and we don't split hairs.

So, we encourage you to come again and to comment freely but objectively if we should fail to meet our goal – creating some fun for kids of all ages.

As you know doing something like this is fairly daunting in Thailand (not to mention expensive) with little but the encouragement of those who got something out of it to look forward to.

If you are a European (of a certain age) and want something a little unique, do contact me and we'll shear a few sheep together – I promise you won't be bored – and the Thais will be amused.

I love this forum! Popcorn time.

My two younger sisters currently spend most of their time (bedtime included) at a horse farm (rabbits and hedgehogs there too) down soi ***. Get to ride, take care of and, be responsible for the horses (cleaning the crap up!) For the little un's it's great but they wouldn't be travelling to Timbucktoo for the experience. Fortunately that soi is where they live.

Not open to all and sundry though I believe, so maybe a little 'day trip' would be nice to this place. Sure it would be a one time thing though.
