An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale struck Ranong province on Monday, but there were no reports of serious damage.

The earthquake's epicentre was located below tambon Ngao in Muang district, about 20 km from the municipality of the southern Andaman coastal province. The quake was recorded at 12.49pm. The depth of has not been determined.

The tremor could be felt across the district, especially by residents in tambon Bang Non, Khao Niwet, Pak Nam and Bang Rin. Reports said residents felt strong shaking and heard a thunderous rumble during the earthquake.

Many collected their belongings and raced to higher ground after they called quake related-agencies but did not receive an explanation about what had happened.

There were no reports of serious damage or casualties in Ranong and adjacent provinces.

Suwit Kosuwan, director of the Mineral Resources Department's Active Fault Research Division, said he had sent officials to install quake detectors in tambon Ngao.

He said there may be aftershocks following the 4.0 quake and advised people not to panic.
