Protected Employement Fields

Post by Murray »

Hey guys,

I was wondering where i could find the latest Protected employee fields?

I will be moving across in October to teach English and i wouldn't mind knowing what else i could branch into while I'm there. I have a qualification in Hospitality management and 2 years of managerial experience but i see Hospitality is a no go.

Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong, but as far as I know, several of the hotels here are managed by Farang.

Yes, if you look at that website I posted:

"List Three

The businesses which Thai nationals are not yet ready to compete with foreigners:

(17)Hotel business, except for hotel management service. "

Steve's list is the FBA, which regulates the business entities, there's a separate schedule that regulates the individual employee, which is as clear as mud in parts...

Here's a link to it: http://wp.doe.go.th/sites/eng/eng-royaldecree.html

So it's... 'Foreign Business Act' and then 'Alien Employment Act'.

Thanks Guys.

And is there absolutely no point in even trying, even if i approach certain Hotel groups from before i get to Thailand? Or if i just try my luck. I am not where near Hotel Management, but i am currently in Senior management of Hotel.

Many (most) of the International Hotels in Thailand have Foreigners (Farangs) working as Executive Chef, F&B Manager, General Manage,r and probably many other Managerial Positions.

I suggest you give it a try, if that's what your heart desires. There certainly are plenty of legal opportunities for Foreigners in the Hotel Industry, and you do not need a Michelin Star, but certainly you need to demonstrate that you can 'Deliver', to your potential employer. I'm imagine there is a lot of Competition in this area.

Give it a go, the world is your onion!

I'm guessing that the international hotels (Hilton, Marriott etc) transfer in the senior management and don't hire too many on site. Given the clientele I'm guessing they want people fluent in English and at least one other Euro language. Likely they want experience also as Thailand on a western salary would be regarded as a bit of a plum posting. Go for it, you never know!

I'll use employment agencies to try work my way through initailly. I currently work for the biggest hotel group in Africa, so that has some backing, and they are currently branching into the UK, so hopefully that will help even more.

As for the salary part, i'm not overly stressed, looking for a change of lifestyle and new experiences, not to make it rich.

I think the point is, as far as I'm aware, it's generally only the high paid positions that are available to farrangs.
