I'll assume there's no prolem driving one of these on the road in Thailand - more importantly HH, but are they available there and if so at what price?

The one pictured below is actually manufactured here in Chongqing, and by all accounts is fairly decent for the price..... to get to Thailand however involves customs, red-tape, back-handers etc...

The problem with the tuk-tuk, is that you'll (IMHO) get a whole load of sh*te from the local tuk-tuk drivers. At least with this you'll avoid that issue..... anyway, was not intended as a people carrier (well, not before 11pm anyway).

Would you need a seperate licence in Thailand, or would a car licence cover driving one of these or similar?

I first saw red ones like these just arrived at a shop in Ratchaburi just over 6 months ago.
Then I noticed them for sale in Hua Hin about a week ago. They are in the shop that sells Lifan motorcyles etc, on the way out of town heading north.
I believe they are Chinese made, not sure of the cost though.

Actually there MAY be a problem getting them legal on-the-road..there was a company about 4-5 years back maybe that were marketing a similar machine, but with a curved windscreen..they sold quite well and there were a few around town..then the police stepped in..!! It turned out they did not fit into a reconised category and were deemed illegal on our (Hua hin/Pratchuap) roads.
I MAY be wrong on this but it's worth checking how the local rules go on them..???

Yes, I remember those and a Farang who lived on an estate near my friend was driving around with his family on one but he did say that it was of dubious legality. It was also bit more fragile looking than the one in the picture above.

Pharvey they have one for sale at the shop mentioned in this thread. Not sure about the price, but if you need to know, I can always stop and ask as I pass it every day. In a way, they're quite similar to the Tuk-Tuks you see up in some of the Isaan villages.


As far as the regular Tuk-Tuk is concerned.........I was going to buy one a while back and was actually told (by a well connected Thai) that strictly speaking, they are only legal in Bangkok, so the police can actually stop and fine you any time they choose. Would still like one though, but obviously not with a yellow plate.

Hi Takiap - Many thanks for the offer. If you get the chance I'd be interested in knowing what make is available and at what cost, but don't go out of your way.

Would be great to get a tuk-tuk, but I just think it would be way too much hassle with regards to other tuk-tuk drivers and the MIB...... that's not saying this vehicle will be any different (or even road legal?)
