Each year in August, Hua Hin hosts a colorful yachting regatta, when upwards of 300 competitors take part in a number of different classes for various prizes. It's great entertainment and takes place along the beach close to the Hyatt Regency Hotel. This year's Hua Hin Regatta will take place over four days from August 6-12, 2012.

Hua Hin Regatta 2012 and Across the Gulf are the annual sailing events that have been organized since the year 2000 in honor of His Majesty King Bhumiphol Adulyadej who excels in sailing sportsmanship in Thailand. This year's regatta, the Hua Hin Regatta 2012 and Across the Gulf, will also celebrate His Majesty the King's 85th birthday anniversary, and will be organized as a competition for several Royal Trophies, namely:

- Royal Vega Rudder trophy for varies classes from His Majesty the King

- Super Mod National Championship trophy from His Majesty the King

- OK dinghy National Championship trophy from Her Majesty the Queen

- Princess Cup for Optimist Championship from HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana

Competitions start at 10:00 am each day. It's free to spectate, and if you're interested in taking part contact: The Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, Navy Headquarters , Building No. 5 , Royal Thai Navy, Bangkok 10600, Tel: 02 4720852, Email: sail@yrat.or.th

It is usually on the beach at the Sofitel, you may want to give the number above a ring to find out if they have moved it this year.

Usually it happens on the seaward horizon. The only thing for landlubbers to see is the boats setting sail from the Sofitel early in the morning, and coming home late afternoon.

I went by the Hyatt this morn. There was no wind to speak of so I saw what I expected to see: The deck closest to the water packed with dinghies (small sailing boats for you landlubbers). Workers were putting up bleachers that encroached onto the soi on the north side of the hotel property. The stage was already in place.

There were many Optimist dinghies present. A 7' 9" (2.36m) long boat is slow. Only way those will compete too far off shore to be seen is to tow them out.

If anyone has any photos please post them, it is quite a spectacle when all of these racers come in.
