Slightly off topic - but relevant to the thread.

Riding without a crash helmet is ILLEGAL in most countries.
I see a lot of farangs riding around Hua Hin without wearing one.
They simply would not do this in their own countries - where in general, road law is more seriously enforced.

So - why is it that they do not wear helmets in Thailand?

Is the concrete that they fall onto any softer?

Or is it that they leave their brains behind when they go out.

Some years back, I recall a posting by the late Dr Dave,Soul Monsta with some pretty graphic photos of the outcome of this stupid habit. Brains all over the road!

Riding without a crash helmet is ILLEGAL in Thailand (for the driver at least)

One day they will leave their brains behind when they are out.

Even at my advanced age , I suppose I would be considered by many that know me , to be one bad ass muther.

:lach:
So much of a bad ass mother you need to come onto a forum to whinge about it
Thailand does seem to attract that certain type of expat these days !
may the Lord give up the bad guy for you ! :thumb:

I'm the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet. I go WAY out of my way to be nice to EVERYBODY , 24 hours a day , but when some ASSHOLE tries to kill my wife , or insult me on a forum like this one , I can only say , why don't we get together , and let me express what 25 years in the Marines , as well as 45 years riding a Harley ( before, just anybody could buy them ) has taught me , and let's see just what kind of brave sole you really are ! Got balls , or is there an anchor tied to your ass ? I'm free all the time !

Mr R - Have to say sorry to hear about your wife's accident, however happy to hear she was fortunate enough to not be seriously injured.... sorry to say, but this is part of life in Asia. I would also add however, the whole "Harley riding Bad Ass ex-Marine, USA is Number 1" stuff is opening you up to a world off piss-taking/banter/abuse, whatever you want to call it - and obviously something that you do not appreciate and "get's your hackles up"..... something that will not serve you well in Thailand.

I can obviously appreciate your anger over the incident, but try live up to your moniker and relax a little.

mr-relaxation,
hope your lady makes a rapid and full physical and emotional recovery from this whole experience. Not too good for this to have happened to you both so soon after your very recent arrival and to now have tainted your views of Thailand.
Suppose this is bit of a message to all traveling half way around the world to live in a totally new environment to be aware of the risks and cultural values of their new country. And also not forgetting the fact that the Thais drive on the opposite side of the road too, which can be a little off putting at first to newcomers.
Complexity is so simply overrated

I didn't realise from the first post there was a witness, and a Thai one at that - that could make all the difference.
What did the police do when they came? Did they take a statement from the witness?

Is it just me Dunc or does every post you post now contain either an insult, complaint or (sometimes) a little dose of borderline flaming.

Everything alright your end :?

mr-relaxaction. This kind of incident happens every day here unfortunately. Very often with a worse outcome. If it was me...rather than seeking any sort of 'justice' as such, I would just keep reminding myself how lucky we all were that it wasn't worse.

Thailand is certainly not everyone's cup of tea but...as strange as it sounds... I wouldn't change it for the world.

I think Mr R has a Mexican Mrs, not Thai, and probably hasn't spent much time here and this might even be their first trip to Thailand and has had his noodle fried by the locals on the road.....remember your first visit?

Living in Mexico, then you probably get used to everyone being capped for the slightest reason, fear of getting car-jacked or getting caught in the crossfire between the drug gangs and the army or cops is a very real threat in many places. Guess there are lots of killing all the time and I would think personal bravado goes a long way in such places despite it's folly and the murder rate being a disgrace in Mexico....ever seen the over-loaded cemeteries? They are full of glossy graves and pictures of punks with gold round their necks killed in street shoot-outs etc.

Perhaps he's just trying to be as reasonable as he can but is too used to living somewhere that he has been conditioned to, and got used to plus it's MO, and married a local from there too.

If that is so then his post becomes more clear as regards the style.

However, I could be completely wrong and applying too much psycho-babble to it and he's got anger management issues.....however, we won't know that, and I'm just giving the benefit of the doubt to him rather like I do to newbies from Europe/US/Oz etc that come to LOS bringing those values they are used to with them and having a nightmare too......or that spout off as if they sanctimoniously know everything and have become an apologists, not to mention an expert on all things Thai, just because they have screwed a few girls and eaten som-tam on the street.

But he is old enough to figure it out, or should be, if possessing a lateral mind that isn't just in one set of thinking from one country.....they are all different and require an open mind if you are going to travel and switch between different cultures/countries as it is demanded if survival is to be guaranteed.

I'll stop now, probably to the relief of some. :thumb:

No Spitfire fill your boots, well presented and the bit about 'anger management ' brought a smile and chuckle to my face. I think you have made a fair assessment!

Mr R : I hope the wife makes a speedy recovery from this incident. As already pointed out trying to be the hard man on here will not get you any friends just pi** taking. What relevance does this have to your accident?

Anyway Hua Hin is a lovely place to live. Motorcycling is extremley dangerous over here and the chances of having an accident are high. We all know the risks. Hopefully you can move on from this experience. Good luck for the future with what ever you decide?

Hello everyone, I promise, this will be my last post on this subject. For the most part, you have all been very supporting and well wishing. That is very comforting. For those of you that took a confronting view, I suppose it is just the caveman in us all. As far as the 10 year boyscout , well , what can I say , some of us NEVER amount to a hill of beans anyway. For anyone who thinks that 45 years riding a Harley , back when it really meant something, doesn't get my point , may I remind you , we are the guys your mom told you to be very careful of ! I'm sure many of the older men here, probally came to Thailand looking for a beautiful young Thai wife , and I'm sure many of you have found one. I'm a bit of a gambler, howeve, and I looked closely at the numbers , there are approx. 15 to 20 million Mexican men that have crossed the border with the U. S. , without going through the proper channels , that means that there are 15 to 20 Million beautiful young Mexican women that will NEVER find a Mexican man to marry ( DO THE MATH ) I got VERY lucky, found a wonderful one, when she was only 18 , and yes , still a virgin , not straight out of a Thai whorehouse. I know what I have, and would die a thousand deaths to protect her. Maybe that adds just a little light. I hope so. In closing , let me say , just as you are all aware , it's not worth losing your one and only life , to some idiot whose has never thought about the dangers involved in driving a motorcycle. As far as the dangers in Mexico , they almost don't exist , as long as you're not involved in the drug trade. Maybe someday someone on the forum will put together a beach party, or something of the likes and I'll get to know some of you. ( just a thought, when I was living in La Paz, all the ex-pats had marine radios and had a cruisers net every morning , with currrent events, weather , local services , ect. ) , just an idea. ANYWAY , excuse me for rambling a bit , and a heart felt good luck to you all . If I never have the pleasure of knowing you here , then maybe one day in Mexico , I'll buy the tacos ! STEVE

:tsk:I have many things I'd like to say about the above post but I think I might be removed from the forum. Such arrogance and big-headedness is unbelievable outside of the USA. I'm sure "Thai whorehouse" will go down well with those married to Thai ladies too.
