Finally, someone has done something right. Pete

BANGKOK, Thailand - Thailand's three election commissioners were convicted Tuesday of allowing unqualified candidates to run in parliamentary elections and sentenced to four years in prison.
The three commissioners were found guilty of violating election laws and abusing their powers by allowing candidates in the April elections to switch constituencies in the second round of balloting.
Thai courts voided the vote as unconstitutional.
The conviction is a setback for embattled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, because all three are seen as his allies and their actions were widely viewed as a favor to the prime minister.
Thais sentence election commissioners
They applied for bail this afternoon, the criminal court denied bail and referred the issue to the appeals court. The appeals court denied bail this evening. The three of them will be spending at least one night in jail.
Since they are all mega rich, I assume they are deemed a high flight risk to avoid 4 long one's in the slammer. Stay tuned to see if their sentence sticks.
All three have said they will still not resign their posts on the EC. Planet of the apes is alive and well. Pete

That's really good news. I was waiting for that decision.
Pete, are you you suggesting they have another way out from the delights of Thai prison where they are now?
How long till the full hearing hearing of The Supreme Court?
It made me laugh to see today in Thai newspapers the opposition candidate bringing some ice coffe and cow pat to the incarerated.
The ruling party even had the front to suggest that the donor of this wonderful food was taking the piss

That was Chuwit, the ex massage parlor king now turned politician. He owns the Davis Hotel on Soi 24 BKK now, and I think most of the rest of the soi as well. He had/has a grudge against the EC as they wouldn't allow him to run in the last election for Senate as they say he "switched" parties too close to the election. This is part of the same thing they were convicted for allowing others to do!lomuamart wrote:That's really good news. I was waiting for that decision.

Their conviction will be appealed, first through the appeals court, and then to the supreme court if the appeals court rules unfavorably. I don't know how backed up the docket is concerning appeals but I doubt we'll see/hear much about them until after the October election. My thinking is that their appeal will be denied but they'll only serve about 1 year and released for good behaviour or similar. They will then probably become monks for a month, then back to business as usual.
These are very powerful people though, ex head of police, military general etc. If I felt I was now on their bad side, I would hire a legion of armed 24 hour security. Pete
I couldn't care less about the politics - I'm just delighted that anybody concerned with that farce back in April, which closed the bars (not once but twice) are now getting punished!!
This is sweet justice for those who dared try to interfere with holiday enjoyment - I just hope they get a few more. At least with a Military Coup they they wouldn't have to close the bars.

No thought at all for the holidaymaker.
