A choice of netbook

Post by buksida »

Need to get a netbook for travelling since my laptop died a couple of months ago. There are so many on the market now that the choice is overwhelming, can those that use a netbook (not laptop) post what it is and their thoughts on it.

I have an Acer Aspire One and I'm very impressed with it. It's been used virtually daily for about three years now without any problems and it doesn't crash. I just use it for internet and documents and it does that as well as any computer I use anywhere.

Totally agree with Steve G.
I have also had an Aspire 1 for over 3 years and use it over 3 hours every day without problems. I bought mine in the UK for just over £200.00 but they were selling the same model on top floor of the Shopping Mall for about the same price.
I also bought an external DVD drive so I could load my software.

asus Eee PC seashell 1210B. HDMI port. 4 GB memory. E350 processor. 12.1 screen. dual core graphics card. cost about 12k in shopping mall - had to get them to deliver it from BKK last year. 6 hours battery life. only weighs about 100-150g more than the aspire 1. free external RW DVD writer.

Toshiba NB520. Purchased last Sept. for travel and when I didn't want to haul my laptop to breakfast. Runs Windows 7 with enough CPU and memory for internet and videos. Only complaint I have is a minor one. Be nice if the screen folded back 10 more degrees so it would be more secure when watching movies while lying down.

Between reviews, specifications and the availability of official warranty service, I narrowed the choice to the NB520 and an Acer model (forgot which one). Liked the Toshiba keyboard way better. I used Acer shopping as a warm up, just to get the frustration out of my system at how anti-consumer oriented buying electronics is in Thailand. At the first store in MV none of their laptops and netbooks had operating systems installed. The combined English skills of the four store guys was insufficient to answer all but the simplest questions. Second stop was part of the national chain with the worst reputation on expat boards for screwing people on warranty work. Service matched their reputation but their English was better. Purchased the Toshiba at IT City, same place I got my laptop 2 years ago.

Thanks for the replies, my previous laptop was an Acer and it lasted just under 4 years before the graphics card blew ... twice ... so I'm a bit reluctant to get another Acer. The spec on that Asus looks pretty damn good, I think 4 gigs of RAM is pretty much essential for today's computing and the 12 inch screen definitely wins over the 10.

Looks like the top floor of the old shopping mall is the place to go. :thumb:

Might have been unfortunate Buks but from what I've read Acer are the best in the business at that price range, not owned one myself but been happy enough with my Packard Bell netbook from a few years back which is owned by Acer.

I've owned three Acers since 1998 and they all still work, a desktop, a laptop and a netbook. The only other computer I've had was an early Texas Instrument laptop and I'm not surprised that they don't make them anymore because the screen part fell off the hinges after about a year!

I bought my Acer a few weeks before you, and it's still going strong. OK, you bought the GT model, and mine was the equivalent of a Lada, but they looked identical. Mine's a little slow by today's standards (it was never fast), but once it's fired up and going, my 2 grand daughters and my son have hours of fun with it.

I wish my current laptop was an Acer.

I've been using an Acer laptop for 6 years with no problems other than those caused by the ISP, Windows etc. Touch wood!
But I've looked at netbooks for future reference. A few friends all bought netbooks a couple of years back for about £125 apiece and they are still going strong and seem fine for the price. I'll check out the brand and get back to you Buksi.

I bought a Lenovo Ideapad almost a year ago and it's doing great considering it rarely gets switched off.......maybe once or twice a week for a few hours. I use it constantly, and the minute I'm not on it, my BIL uses it for facebook, movies, and games. Well worth the 8000 baht price tag.

As mentioned above, the IT mall at the top of the old Hua Hin Shopping Mall maybe a good place to start.
