Converting Baht to USD in Hua Hin?

Post by buksida »

Need some spending money for an overseas trip, anyone know if this is possible?

Went to the banks: "mai dai - go to the exchange booths".

Went to the booths: "mai dai - go to the bank".

:banghead:

I know you can do it at the airport but they ream you on the exchange rate.

Buksi: If they have any in the bank that customers have exchanged they will sell them to you. Kasikorn in MV had some today when I went after 4 pm as I saw them when the teller opened her drawer.

Its also where I bought mine for Vietnam in May.

Are you sure? We often converted back to Sterling at the airport, and never seemed to get a bad deal.

Got hammered at Swampy last time when converting to Pesos, maybe they're easier on the mainstream currencies. Today's rate was 30.8, the booths had it at 30.4 which is close enough - just a flurry of "mai mees" from the disinterested girlies in the three I checked downtown this arvo.

Will try the banks in MV instead.

We had this problem when visiting Cambodia. You need to go to Banks or Exchange booths at the end of the day when they have dollars, any dollars at the end of the day are taken out of circulation. If you are going to Vietnam they are happy to exchange Baht in most jewllery stores and you will soon be a millionnaire!

Earlier this year some of our group changed baht to indonesian rupiah at Bangkok airport. The rest of us changed at Jakarta airport. Those of us changing in Jakarta were considerably better off. The old Don Muang airport used to be better for exchange rates. You also used to be able to buy food and drink at reasonable prices, but not anymore! Best advice is not to do anything with money at Bangkok airport. The only good value there is downstairs where the rail link is - they have a 7/11, Subway etc, that are good value.

I used to buy the USD at Ayuddhya Bank Buksi and never had a problem. Mind you never large amounts so you might need to order what you need.

All banks change to USD with no problems as long as you do not want more that USD10k at any one time and you have a passport, the only issue will be if they do not have sufficient funds in the actual bank, if the do not they will get it for you by the next working day. Go to Kasikorn or Krungsri no problems, I do it regularly. Exchange booths in HH will not do it.

Well I went into Kasikorn main branch in Hua Hin and got a "mai dai", (although she did ask if I was single) ... it certainly wasn't 10k US.

I normally exchange at the airport, but on occasions when I have needed a fairly large quantity, I have ordered with Kasikorn, 3/4 days notice, no problem.

There's your answer, single gets the best exchange rate

In Bangkok the wife's brother always takes us to these Chinese moneychangers, backroom type operation. Always easy to change from or to USD and rates are better than posted at the banks.

Anyone use these, and see them in Hua Hin?

Used one in CM but I don't think I've ever seen one in HH migrant. In fact HH is a bit strange - a few Chnese run stores but the Chinese community isn't too noticeable. Maybe for another thread but is this due to HHs' location?
