extending infant stay for 6 months

Post by Mr-Zedd »

Hello everyone,

I have looked through this thread and can't find any info on my friend's situation so I thought I'd ask.

My friend's wife is Thai and she arrived for a visit from Canada 2 weeks ago using a Thai passport. She brought her 5 month old baby with her who has a Canadian passport. The infant entered on a 30 day (no visa) stamp. My friend's wife plans to stay here in Thailand with the baby for 6 months to visit her family.

When she goes to leave and return to Canada will there be a problem with the baby's entry stamp because it has only a 30 day stamp? One Thai friend (who also lives in Canada) mentioned that since the baby is young that she is allowed to stay with the mother as long as is desired irregardless of the limiting 30 day stamp.

Does anyone have any experience with this or know anything about it?

I dont want my friend's wife to try and leave in 6 months only to find out that her baby's passport will be charged 500 baht per day for overstaying 5 months.

My friend's wife was considering getting her baby a Thai passport while she is here if that will make things easier.

I looked at the official Thai immigration website but couldn't find any documentation to answer this question. I just suggested she go to the office here to ask them what to do.

Just thought I'd ask here on the forum in case someone had some experience with this.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

My experience of this was 20 years ago, but my 18 month old son had stand before some senior immigration official (with me of course) and have the riot act read to him. He got a nasty stamp in his passport, but there was no overstay fee.

It seems a bit 'jobsworth' to put an 18 month old kiddie through that, but TIT.

Been through the same thing three times this year, My two are 14months and everytime we have been through Immigration at the airport, they have stamped a regular dated exit stamp in there passports even though they exceeded the 30 day Visa on arrival stamp.

Hua Hin immigration did say to us it would be easier if they had a visa, but I dont see the need till they actually need one.

Absolutely correct... and cases I have seen, there been no adverse entry in the passport.

I did say my experience was 20 years old, although I have heard of it happening since. Maybe it was because they had to process me at the same time :?

Immigration processing "BJ" would certainly be a chore..

Hello everyone,

Thanks for your many quick responses.

So the general consensus is that since the infant is under the age of 14(?) it will be ok when she leaves the country in 5 months to return to Canada every though she only has a 30 day entry stamp.

Good to know, thanks for your help.

I will pass this info along to the mother.

If I were her though, I would get a Thai passport for the child while here. It's easy and a good thing for the little one to have for future trips, and/or simply to establish her Thai nationality. I assume before getting the passport her Canadian birth certificate needs to be translated to Thai, and certified through her Mother's Thai ID that the child has rights to Thai citizenship. It is my understanding that the Thai mother has registered the infant with the Thai embassy in Canada prior to coming here. I will suggest she get a Thai passport for the infant while she is here.

Thanks prcscct.

Blimey, immigration is a bit on the fascist side with the toddlers from the posts above.
