The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) is preparing to file multiple lawsuits against caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and some of his associates for embezzlement, abuse of authority and lese majeste. The five key PAD leaders_Maj-Gen Chamlong Srimuang, Sondhi Limthongkul, Pibhop Dhongchai, Somsak Kosaisuk and Somkiat Pongpaiboon_yesterday held a press conference to announce their decision to file three suits against Mr Thaksin and some cabinet ministers for embezzlement and abuse of authority. Eleven other suits would target Mr Thaksin alone.
In the embezzlement suit, the PAD would accuse Mr Thaksin and caretaker Finance Minister Thanong Bidaya of embezzling proceeds from the sales of two- and three-digit lottery tickets to finance the political activities of Thai Rak Thai party and some smaller parties. In this suit, Mr Thanong would be named the first defendant and Mr Thaksin as the second defendant.
The PAD said Mr Thaksin and Mr Thanong would be held responsible for the damage caused to the country by the Election Commission's handling of the April 4 election, which was nullified by the Constitution Court. A suit demanding 2,400 million baht for the damage caused would be filed against the two.
In the third suit, the PAD would sue Mr Thaksin, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Wannasathit and assistant national police chief Pol Lt-Gen Chaiyant Maklamthong for abusing their authority.
The PAD claimed Mr Thaksin and Pol Gen Chidchai were behind the officer's move to take action against the five core PAD leaders.
Mr Somkiat said at least 11 cases would be filed directly against Mr Thaksin. The suits concern lese majeste, vested interests involving Mr Thaksin and his family, the sale of his Shin Corp shares, and Mr Thaksin allegedly bribing the Constitution Court judges.
Mr Somsak said the PAD would seek cooperation from taxpayers nationwide to demand 2,400 million baht from the three former election commissioners for the damage they had caused by mishandling the April 2 election, later nullified by the court.
