no timewasters please, guy from new zealand came to visit earlier, bought the phone, then came back an hour or two later saying the speaker was too quiet. took it to Market village phone shops and they all said it was normal and there was no issue.

Do you mean it rang too quietly, or that music was too quiet? Did he not check it before he bought it?

If it is like the Iphone, I find the volume too low. Not for the ringer, but for listening to it.
I'm not hard of hearing, yet, but I do sometimes have trouble hearing people talk if there is background noise on my side. The volume adjusts up, but not far enough IMHO

There is an app you can download for the I Phone to increase the volume quite a bit. I have it on my I Phone 4, it's a little ridiculous but it does the job.
Just go to the App Store and search for "volume" and you will see a few apps you can test.
