The Loy Krathong Festival is almost on us. Can anybody tell me what's happening and where? Best places to go, and what times please?

Last year I went to the floating markets up Soi 112 - it was very busy and a good atmosphere and of course plenty of places to launch your floating candles.

Kao Tao around 7. In my experience, nothing much happens at Loy Kratong other than the obvious, but Kao Tao is a pretty good launching spot and there's always plenty of decent food.
I'm sitting this one out though.

I don't recommend the beach in Hua Hin very busy and the wind far to strong to launch your Krathong better off on a river.
We have tried a couple of times at the beach, not really any good.

Thanks guys - plenty of food for thought there.

Does anybody know what's happening in the little square just up from the Tessabahn? They've put up lots of flags and things, which I assume is for Loy Krathong.

If you can put up with the total commercialism of the place then Wat Huai Monkol is the place to be.
Plenty of ATMs, Lots of Krathongs for sale, foodstalls etc etc.............

When I was in Hua Hin I used to go to the Sofitel area to watch the elaborately decorated floats go by, then return home to float my krathong at the nearest khlong. As in the song...

'We're together at the khlong, we're together at the khlong,
each one with this khratong...
.' :D

Apparently it's bad luck if your khratong tips over before it sets sail. You have to wade out to sea about 30 meters to make that happen on the beach. The wind just pushes it back as has been said in this thread.

Here are some Loy Krathong clips and song for anyone that's not experienced it. It's a huge event in Thailand. Thai's learn the 'Loy Khratong' song year in year out from Nursery.

Chaing Mai...

(Can't get the clip to work)

The English version of the song if you want to learn it.(Not aged well BTW  )

It seems that we're either going to Khao Tao or Wat Huai Monkol. Prospective parking opportunities will make our final decision.

It also seems as if there's going to be something going on near Hua Hin temple at about 4 (I haven't received the translation for what that is yet), and we'll go to watch whatever that is first.

They will probably be getting ready for the Kings' birthday BB - although that square is also used for special markets and exhibitions.
December 5th get to the square about 7.30 to 8 pm ready to light your pink candle.

I've just been told that there is a parade from the little square, going towards the clock tower at about 6 tonight. It's meant to be very colourful. We'll watch that, and then go somewhere to float our boat.
