ATM card charges

I would like to get a new ATM card here and was wondering which bank has the lowest withdrawal charges.

the withdrawal charges in your province are zero if you use your own bank machines, so if you get the card in Hua Hin and use in Hua Hin you are ok. If you take card to Bangkok then you are charged

you are only charged when you travel or use other banks machines

This may be old news but I only discovered it the other day, Kasikorn bank cards can use the Yellow bank atms for free within the province. The two banks have a deal apparently.

Never used mine overseas but if used in another province then i believe it's a flat 15 baht irrespective of the amount withdrawn, at least that's what I have been charged on a 10,000 withdrawal.

I doubt you'll get an ATM card issued in Thailand that can be used overseas (correct me if I'm wrong).

Also, as far as I'm aware, the charge for withdrawls and balance checking from a bank other than your own within the province, is 10bt.

I use my Bangkok Bank card all the time in China and Hong Kong and it is 100 baht per withdrawal.

I also use my Bangkok Bank ATM/debit card occasionally when out of the country without any issue so far. It is backed by visa

I have a Kasikorn card issued in HH and if I have to use it in Cha Am, I usually go to a Kasikorn ATM and the charge is 15 baht. Today I was buying something at Thai Watsadu and saw something else I needed, but not enough cash on me so used their only ATM machine Krungsri and the fee was 20 baht. Not sure if that is their normal charge for different province or linked to it being a different bank as well?

With my Kasikorn card I was not able to make withdrawals in the U.S., but I could make purchases using POS machines (that's point of sale, not the pejorative... )

And since I opened my account in Hua Hin, it always costs me 15 baht to use the card here in Pran Buri or up in Bangkok. I didn't notice the horrible international fees like I get on my American (Wells Fargo, now *there's* a POS) ATM card from my U.S. purchases.

As it stands now, with exchange rate and a $5 fee on either end to use a U.S. card, I figure i'm getting about 25 baht to the dollar, unless I withdraw an enormous amount (which I don't like to do.)

I've used my Bangkok Bank ATM card in the UK and because of the much higher limits here I was able to draw 1,000 pounds in one go from any UK ATM. I certainly couldn't do that with my UK card.

K-Bank card worked in Malaysia and Singapore.

I've always found any Thai bank ATM card works in any country I've been too, it's all (or mostly!?) about the two networks that you see printed on your card, ie: 1) Visa 'PLUS' and 2) Mastercard 'CIRRUS'.

Plus (interbank network) - "Plus (also known as Visa Plus or the Plus System) is an interbank network that covers all Visa credit, debit, and prepaid cards, as well as ATM cards issued by various banks worldwide. Currently, there are one million Plus-linked ATMs in 170 countries worldwide."

Cirrus (interbank network) - "Cirrus is a worldwide interbank network operated by MasterCard Worldwide, and was founded in 1986. It links MasterCard, Maestro, Diners Club credit, debit and prepaid cards to a network of over 1,000,000 ATMs in 93 countries."

And FWIW both networks are run by a bunch of merchant er's

Not sure what the charges are when you use local cards abroad, or in different provinces within Thailand, but I've noticed that I can now use any bank's ATM and I don't get charged a fee as was always the case in the past.


On a slightly different note, I can't seem to use my card anywhere today for some strange reason. The minute I enter my PIN I'm told the transaction has been cancelled, and that I must contact my card issuer. On a Sunday.........great.
