Tourists visiting Hua Hin and other areas along the Gulf have been warned to be cautious about swimming in the sea after big waves began pounding the shores in the early hours on Monday.
Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul ordered officials to get the message out to tourists during the New Year holidays.
Waves up to 3 metres high and strong winds hit the resort town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province about 3am, causing anxiety for some Thai and foreign visitors.
The Meteorological Department did not issue any warning but said Hua Hin would expect waves about 2 metres high over the next few days due to strong wind across the Gulf of Thailand.
Even bigger seas, with waves up to 4 metres, could be experienced in Koh Samui, another popular tourist destination in Surat Thani province, it said.
"People along the coast should beware of high waves inshore,'' the department said and urged ships especially small boats from Surat Thani and further south to stay ashore from Monday to Wednesday.
More than 2,000 trawlers and fishing boats in Pattani province were anchored in the Pattani River to avoid the weather. But some small boats were trying to fight waves which were 5 metres high on Monday.
Two fishing boats were capsized on Monday after strong winds and wavers overturned the vessels about a kilometre off the coast in Panare district, police said.
Four fishermen including a 11-year-old boy stayed afloat in the sea before other fishermen rescued them and sent the four to the district hospital.
Ma Seng, one of the survivors, said he was aware of the harsh weather but could not sit idly by. He and his colleagues in neighbouring Yaring district had no choice but to set out to sea to make a living, the 45-year-old fisherman added.

I wonder if this will cause the huge pile up of timber and junk on the beach as in BB's photos of a few years ago. I hope not for the sake of the people there on holiday.

Well I know the wind was strong overnight. Re-arranged furniture on my balconies and lost some washing over one balcony
