Chinese New Year 2013 in Hua Hin
Chinese New Year 2013 in Hua Hin
This will be my first Chinese New Year in Thailand, and I was wondering what happens in Hua Hin. As a starter we were down at Market Village yesterday evening, and I saw this:

Here's a 2010 YouTube of the Hua Hin celebrations:

Thanks Pete, that looks well worth watching. However, I was a bit surprised to see the exact same props being used at Market Village a few years on.

Just a passing thought - I've called this thread Chinese New Year 2013. Is it 2013, or something quite different?

Yeah, I think even the Chinese use our years, unlike Thais. Take a look at below, a very complicated minestrone soup, depending upon which epoch one is talking about.Big Boy wrote:Just a passing thought - I've called this thread Chinese New Year 2013. Is it 2013, or something quite different?

It is the year of the Snake though coming up...I think. Pete

Re: Chinese New Year 2013 in Hua Hin
The year 2012 in the Chinese calendar is the Year of the Dragon. It began on January 23, 2012 and will end on February 9, 2013.

Edit:
No wonder they don't know what year it isThe Chinese year beginning January 23, 2012 is reckoned in the seldom-used continuously numbered system to be 4709, 4649, or 4710, depending on the epoch used.

Well, seeing as we've been quoted 1K GBP per person to fly from Chongqing, Terry and the Fishing Lodge will be quite safe over Chinese New Year. We have instead set up something on Mother in Law's roof!! Will try and post a video of the fireworks providing I survive the night and avoid deportation.

Some websites advise that there will be a Chinese New Year Festival at Phon King Petch Public Park on Feb 10 but I can find no details of what is planned for the event

I've just noticed a 'Chinese looking' stage has been errected outside G Hua Hin Resort & Mall. Anybody know what's being planned there?

It looks as though the Tessabahn's offering is going to be in the little park just up from their offices (towards the Railway Station). This is the poster they're displaying.
I'm now torn between the Tessabahn and the Market Village shows. Market Village probably has the edge, purely from the car parking angle.
I will post photos, if there are any.

Re: Chinese New Year 2013 in Hua Hin
Well, what can I say? I went to the Market Village show, but after an awful hours entertainment, I decided to take a walk down the road to have a couple of teeth pulled because it would be more fun
I stayed for one hour. The 2 commentators and the guy from the Tessabahn liked the sound of their own voices too much for my liking. Mind, I think they must have been playing for time - I can only guess that the show was arriving in Thai time.
It started with little kids dressed in Chinese attire walking out on the catwalk 2 at a time. The grannies in the audience seemed to love this.
There was then a load of commentator chat. Then they made the kids walk out again, but this time to make it different, they made them wai.
More commentator chat. Then one of the things I'd gone to see - some dragon dancing.
More commentator chat. Then they announced the kids were coming out on to the catwalk again - I left in disgust.
In fairness to the show, my son stayed, and he says it turned into a very good show.

Re: Chinese New Year 2013 in Hua Hin
MV stuff tends to be OTT crap IMO and aimed at the tourists and HiSo youngsters from BK. The real Chinky stuff happens up sois where older Chinese residents reside. Private parties and fire crackers galore.
Binta used to be good for firecracker displays but apparently MIB have shown some force recently about it.
A well known UK forum poster who is currently here at the moment is indeed a 'pyro' expert and has a firework business in the UK is indeed a 'showman supremo' but I hear his wings are clipped
