LETTER OF RESIDENCE

Post by Brit Jim »

Hi All

I will be travelling direct from UK to Pattaya to collect a car.

The seller states that I need a 'Letter of Residence' from Immigration even though I have a House registration book and Thai driving license supporting my name and address...

I just wandered if this letter of residence can be obtained from ANY Immigration office as long as you have supporting
documents OR must it be from the office where you live? If I really need this letter I am hoping to make it at Pattaya.

Personally I do not think that I need it as the House Registration Book surely proves residency?

Any feedback appreciated as I can not get a definite answer from the Seller or Pattaya Immigration?

Yes you need the letter if you are buying a car or motorbike here.
Honda took our details and did the letter for us "free" of charge only took them a few hours.

Immigration charge about 1000 Baht for the letter I think it is because as Farang our names are not in the house registration.

I would have thought the the House Residency Book (I assume you mean the Yellow Book?) would be sufficient proof, but hopefully somebody who has jumped through the hoop already will advise.

I had to get a letter and used the Residency Book to give to the Immigration office. If they want a letter, you must have a letter. IMHO It is not logical but...
I wouldn't have to manage my anger if people could learn to mange their stupidity!

If you work here and have a work permit this can substitute for the letter as it also has your home address.

I agree :D Best not to question or argue as this achieves nothing. Simply comply with requests and don't forget to smile :D

You might think the letter would be a general one that you could use for any purpose when you need to prove your address, but no....

Immigration gave me a letter saying that i lived at xxx,xxx etc but the purpose was written as to get a driving license. When i went to the garage to hand over the letter, they made me go back to immigration and get the letter that says the purpose is to buy a car. immigration admitted the mistake and no extra cost.

i havnt heard of garages getting the letter for people. They would need your passport, blue book etc etc.

Yes Spot on..

When I transferred the bike at Pranburi HH Immigration insisted that I make the letter using the House Registration Yellow Book. When I arrived at Pranburi they said the Yellow Book superseded the letter and not needed...

The seller tells me that I need a letter from the hotel to say that I m staying there, even though its only 3 nights, cost 100B.
I give this to Pattaya immigration and they give me the Letter of Residence stating I am buying a car, cost 200B.

I guess every Immigration and Department of Transport vary and we just play the game!

Moving onwards, Department of Transport at Pattaya looks like fun, NOT. Ive done the research on the car transfer and the Seller seems switched on. One LONG day at DLT and it should be sorted...
