Authorities have put up signs on popular beaches in Krabi province, warning tourists to be wary of ill-behaved, hungry monkeys, a Thai Rath report said on Tuesday.

The signs are written in both Thai and English with the message "Beware of the Monkeys". They were placed at popular tourist attractions such as Long Beach, Monkey Bay and on Phi Phi Island.

Duangporn Paothong, director of Phi Phi Island Hospital, said about 600 people were treated in hospital after being attacked by monkeys last year, and 75% of the victims were foreigners.

She warned tourists not to feed the monkeys living along the beaches because they will develop a bad habit of becoming hostile towards people who do not give them food.

People who get bitten by the monkeys should immediately contact physicians so that they can receive tetanus shots, Dr Duangporn said.

Since the beginning of this year, about 50 tourists have reportedly been attacked by monkeys, a significant decline from last year..

Did the good Doctor also say that all species of monkeys in Thailand are incapable of spreading rabies?

Yes they are not cuddly creatures at all - the Rhesus monkeys are quite aggressive unlike Gibbons. Take a good stick and don't let any near your things either. The buggers in Lopburi steal on order!

Yeah and the Thais think they are reincarnations of Hanuman - yet another aspect of the Indian influence in LOS.

Don't buy bananas for them. They'll go crazy when the fruit is finished.
And they've got big teeth!!

Feeding them actually started the problem. Naturally they are quite shy creatures but after co-existing with humans that feed them, they expect to be fed. If you don’t feed them they become troublesome and will attempt to grab whatever you are carrying. They have become incredible scavengers in many of the Indian cities and will break into houses, damage everything and steal food from the refrigerator. The Indian city authorities in Delhi employ special handlers with an aggressive and larger species of monkey (I forget the species name)to scare them away from public areas

Exactly. Well said.
I can remember the critters running around the roofs in Bangalore.
I was told to beware.

I have read stories in India in the last ten years, about monkeys crawling into backyards and taking out unattended babies from the stroller and then "eating them." I know this sounds gory but it is true and Monkeys are to be taken seriously. In all instances that I know about (three), the baby was killed.
I wouldn't have to manage my anger if people could learn to mange their stupidity!

The New Delhi Municipal Council deploys langurs around New Delhi to keep smaller monkeys from causing any trouble.
Because they are large and fierce, langurs are often used keep other monkeys in check in public places.

Little buggers at monkey temple attacked us when they saw the baby feeding bottle. The people that have businesses up there must get really annoyed!

I'm not sure whether it will work with the regular monkeys you come across over here, but in South Africa we would often carry a lifelike toy snake with us to keep baboons at bay when we went climbing. Their numbers were typically far less than the moneys here, and in general the baboons tend to avoid people, but in some areas, they have also grown accustomed to being fed by tourists, and they won't hesitate to gang up on you and then steal your backpack. Throw a rubber snake in their direction, and they would either be gone in an instant, or else they would fall over and pretend to be dead.

In some rural areas they will also break into homes, and even kill dogs, including large breeds. Vicious bastards, and certainly best avoided.

To be honest, I never go up to the temple on Takiap mountain simply because of the monkeys there. You would think the council would intervene and do a yearly cull, but of course that's not going to happen.

Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact
