Hua Hin to ease water shortage worry

Post by buksida »

The Hun Hin Municipality is seeking a new source of water to ease concern about a possible water shortage during the summer.

Mayor Nopporn Wuthikul said the municipal office was trying to secure an 11 million baht purchase contract for water from Kaeng Krachan reservoir in Phetchaburi to feed the resort town in April.

The search for a new supplier came after water in Pran Buri dam dropped sharply to 30% of its overall capacity after drought hit the area. Hua Hin mainly relies on the dam to supply tap water.

The office has alerted hotels and all resort facilities to stock up on water as temperatures rise and demand runs high. Some resorts were buying clean water from private suppliers.

Some communities also have stocked water as they were told that supplies would not be provided around the clock.

The municipality will spend 1.2 billion baht on a long-term plan to look for new sources of water to prevent shortages as the town of Prachuap Khiri Khan was rapidly expanding, Mr Nopporn said.

This is nothing new and comes around every year. The problem this year is more acute due to the longer than usual dry period and a lack of rain during last year’s rainy season, combined with the number of new residences and hotels having been completed.

The municipality have been aware of this for a very long time and have done very little to solve the problem.

I live on the outskirts of the town, close to the airport. It is a rare day indeed when we receive any water from the municipal pipes, at any time of the year. In this district most people resort to trucking in water or resort to wells as they main source of supply.

With a current lack of planning and foresight the problem can only get worse as the current, non ending, stream of developments, in the HH & Cha Am, come on line.

I can remember when the supply in Roowamsook off Kanklong Road was very sporadic and we used to have to get water trucked in. As soon as they sort out one area another area is developed. The water trucking business has been busy from when I first came here in 1990 and is likely to continue. Especially as most of the trucks/pickups seem to be the same ones that were being used twenty years ago. They sure know how to build pickups that last here in Thailand. The only area that I think has never had any problems is around Naebkahard.

Yes, this is the only regret I have of buying property where I did. Unfortunately, land owners and estate agents are not willing to alert potential buyers to the fact that they will have to truck water in. Thailand might still be a cheap country to live in, but water wise, I've spent more money in my few years here than I have my entire life before moving here. Thank goodness I don't have a garden to maintain.

Of course with the last local elections there were plenty of promises made, but so far, as was to be expected, none have been fulfilled.

My next door neighbour is one of the recently elected local councilors. Guess what? He has just had a new well built on his land. Don’t expect too much to change in the near future!

bit worrying for those of us (contributing towards the problem) who have purchased new-builds.....

Also disconcerting to hear the likes of Sansiri's new project 'Baan Kiang Fah' located near the flyover south of Hua Hin consisting of a whopping 600+ units...

Maybe they will furnish Petchkasem road through Hua Hin with speed bumps???

Related to this; I just moved in to new house and the area hasn't received any water from government pipes for around a week now. I'm at cha-am side, maybe few kilometers from Palm Hills golf.

Do you know where to order clean water from?

Way too often I see water trucks filling up from the roadside stream at khlang khlong road (the canal road, don't know how to spell that) and the water we received from a local truck business couple is brown yellow.. I'm not too eager to use it.

The municipal water company will supply water by truck if you give them a call. With regard to water discoloration you should make sure that your holding tank is clean. When the water is pumped from a truck it is usually under high pressure and will cause any sediment in the tank to mix with the water and of course the same is true for any algae etc that has formed on the inside of the tank.

Indeed they will, but they also frequently get their water from the klong.

This water problem is just one of the reasons I left Hua Hin for the South of Thailand. If you have ever gone out to the Pranburi Dam and seen the water lever there you would become concerned immediately. Keep all that building of developments and condos going and you have to wonder where the water will come from.
