'Ngan Kin Jeh' Festival

Post by pharvey »

Apparently a huge vegetarian food festival celebrated by Chinese Thais at the start of the 9th lunar month - (October/November). It seems the "main gatherings" are in Bangkok's Chinatown and also Phuket and Trang - has anyone visited these or perhaps others closer to Hua Hin?

Certainly interested in visiting for the food, but not particularly keen on joining devout followers in abstaining from meat, alcohol and sex.....

Years ago I happened to be in Phuket during the festival and saw all those weird parades where people who had knives and tubes going through there cheeks. Plenty of great food in Bangkok's Chinatown and in other places, if I recall correctly, food stalls will have yellow flags (not political) to show they are selli veggie food.

Look out for this sign. Once you do you will see it everywhere. The restaurants with this sign sell vegetarian food all year round. Resembles the number 17 but surely is a Chinese character.

Duh. Of course. Never read it that way. Just assumed it would be something Chinese. Not easy to read these stylized Thai letters. Thanks for that.
