Broken Mower

Post by PeteC »

Hit a large protruding steel bolt on a street light mounting plate yesterday. Stopped the blade and engine cold. Blade now difficult to turn by hand from underneath, and pull start completely frozen and won't move. I'm of the opinion I've bent the main blade shaft, and being that the mower is getting old I have a mind just to give it away and buy new. Any opinions on what's actually wrong with it? Pete

Yep! Sorry to say it sounds bad.

You could take out he plug to reduce the compression and see if it turns over?

You could try taking it to one of the many hardware shops for them to take a look - sure it will either be free or very nominal.

There's a shop deals (& I think repairs) mowers, strimmers etc just before the 7/11 on your left as you've passed the Gee supermarket heading out of town. If you turn right onto the Pala U Rd as most traffic does nr that 7/11, then you've gone to far. May be worth a look-see..???

As far as I know, Pete doesn't stay in Hua-Hin.

Pete, just have a word with one or two locals, and I'm sure you'll get pointed in the right direction.

I hate to say it, but sounds like you bent the crankshaft or seized the main bearing... If this mower is older... Time to ditch it and get a new one... I used to work in a lawnmower shop growing up... Seen this too many times...

Thanks everyone. I agree with Boz unfortunately. It's frozen solid. Anyway, will have someone confirm diagnosis before scraping. At least I'll get joy from buying a new lawn toy. :D Pete

I get depressed when shopping for lawnmowers in Thailand:

Image

New mower, Home Depot, John Deere, 17.5 hp, free delivery in US, full warranty, $1,499US

Image

Used mower, private owner -- baht & sold, Briggs and Stratton, 17.5hp, $3,046US

Must be a luxury item suffering associated tariffs.

I have a plot of 1.1/2 Rai with about half of that grass, so I looked to see if a ride on was available about 6 months ago. I wasn't holding out a lot of hope which was just aswell and I'm sure that even had I managed to find one locally, the cost would have been astonomical. It was difficult enough trying to find a half-decent conventional mower which I eventually sourced from Thai Watsadu, it has a 50cm blade and takes almost 2 hours to cut the grass, whereas one of these machines would make it a pleasure rather than a chore!!

Ride on mowers! I can't believe that some people are just too lazy to go out and find someone else to mow their lawn.
