Firstly, apologies to Sensei John for not getting in touch sooner – life is busy and all that.
Back at the end of March 2013, me and my two boys, Tom and Pi did a little training with John whilst on holiday in Hua Hin as Tom was preparing for an imminent black belt grading. Although we are all Shotokan karateka with the KUGB, the underlying principles of the styles have the same roots and it’s always interesting to get a different perspective on things and, of course, all training is training!
Anyway, I have to say that John was very accommodating and extremely insightful as an instructor and I would definitely recommend anyone thinking of training – either as a beginner or to hone existing skills – to take a trip to his dojo and see for themselves. Once there, you will be training with a maximum of four other people in a very intimate training environment, which is extremely rare these days, when most training is done in drills in large classes. You are unlikely to receive the kind of one-to-one instruction offered by John anywhere else.
Here are some photos of John giving such instruction to my youngest, Tom:
As John will know, we took the opportunity to train with him a couple of times before heading off up country for my eldest son’s ordination as a monk and had planned to squeeze in another training session before returning to the UK. As it happened the party went on a couple of days longer than expected so we didn’t get a chance to do that but two months after we returned to the UK, Tom competed in, and won, the KUGB Welsh Kumite Championships, defeating the British Champion in the final. I can definitely say that training with John was a great help in making sure that Tom kept his training momentum going whilst on holiday.
John, I have some great photos of him in action at the event and will try to resize them so I can post them here and you can see how much progress he made in the relatively short space of time between him training with you and competing at the event.
Unfortunately Tom was ill for his black belt grading so didn’t take it but will hopefully be ready to take it before the year is out and I’ll be sure to let you know how he gets on.
