Leisurely Cycle

Thinking of renting a bicycle whilst in Hua Hin, is there any nice area to go for a leisurely cycle for a few hours or is it mostly ducking and diving out of busy roads?

There are lots of places to go riding, whether you choose to stick to the roads, or whether you to go off road. While the roads and the traffic do look daunting, it's not quite so bad once you're on your bike and once you get out of the town center, the picture changes quite a bit. The road out to Pala U is quite nice for a ride although you do have that killer hill to contend with. Another nice ride is to follow the klong road north until you see signs for Springfield Golf Course. Follow the signs and take a ride all the way to the golf course; have a beer or three at the Manor Hotel, and then head back.

Personally, I would not ride a bike ANYWHERE near Hua Hin on ANY road! Go down to Pak Nam Pran, or somewhere similar right away from the main roads.

I saw something today coming down from Bangkok that made my hair stand on end!
One Farang on a bike with a small child on a small bike that was connected to his. Followed by a female that I presume was the childs Mother, pedalling along behind. All this less than 1 metre away from an endless stream of maniacs in trucks, mostly with dog trailers attached, racing each other down the road!

They were all loaded up with backpacks, and did have bright coloured clothes on. Maybe to hide the blood better when they get plasted over the edge of the road!

About a month ago there was a young couple on bikes killed while riding along a highway, I think in the South somewhere. Utter madness!

But as mentioned avoid Petchkasem Road wherever possible, its bad enough on a motorbike!

Cmon, where's your sense of adventure. Last year I took part in the Hua-Hin Alley Cat race which involved several of the craziest parts of town; it took place on a Friday night, and it was raining on and off.........it was awesome and I seriously look forward to doing it again.





PS: If anyone does hear any news regarding another Alley Cat race in Hua-Hin, please post details.

A nice route for starters would be to find the road to Black-Mountain golf-course, then loop back towards town again..this road is not to busy & has many shops for refreshments dotted all along the trail.

Off topic UPDATE:


Just after my last post, I visited the Bicycle Thailand website, and discovered that there is indeed another Alley Cat race schedule for the evening on Friday, November the 1st.


It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you enjoy a bit of a thrill racing through traffic at night and etc, then be sure to get yourself there on the night. It's free and actually good fun which ends with a meet up for prize giving and a few cold ones. Hopefully this year's race won't include a checkpoint at the top of Monkey Mountain in Takiap right at the tail end of the race.

Last year there were quite a few Thai youngsters in the race as well, although I wouldn't want my kids doing it.

That's the way I go as I live out that way and there is very little traffic on those roads, it's safer than cycling in a lot of parts of Europe. If you want, or have to, cycle in the city itself, get to know all the small alleyways and backroads to avoid the traffic.

Well, it seems that they at least made it to Hua Hin. Spotted them this morning on the Klong Rd near Soi 2, heading south.
