Transfer Funds to UK

I've tried to find some up to date info on this. Found plenty of advice about UK to Thailand but not the other way. Does anyone have any recent experience of transferring substantial amounts back to the UK.

Yes Ive thought about this, easy to bring in the money but maybe lots of 'hoop jumping' to get it back.

I believe you can take out 20K in USD per trip but not really practical and why take the risk?

Personally as long as you have a paper trail / evidence of the money coming into LOS then you should be able to do it at your bank BUT Im guessing there will be a limit.

Again if its from the sale of a property or business the bank will require certain documents to prove the sale before releasing the funds Im sure.

In LOS there is always a way to things here so I would speak nicely to one of those lovely bank girls!!!

Not to the UK by my experience may be helpful anyway. about a month ago I transferred over a quarter million dollars back to my bank in the U.S. We had no paper trail of it coming in. We have accounts at Siam Commercial, Bank of Ayudhya, and Bangkok Bank. The first two said "no", not without proof of it coming in, but it was no problem at Bangkok Bank. They said we could transfer up to one million USD per year with no proof of anything. The local bank manager knew the money came from sale of property as we had explained it in a previous meeting with him to make sure bank draft from another Thai bank would be no problem to deposit into their bank and verify that subsequent international transfers of large amounts would also be ok. They have to notify the BOT (which they did by phone while we were there) but all the BOT asked was what was the purpose of the transfer which we replied was to purchase property in the U.S. The money arrived in our U.S. bank account in 3 days and we were only charged 400 baht on this end and $16 on the receiving end.

Our Bangkok Bank account (as well as the U.S. bank account) is a joint account between me and my Thai wife so I'm not sure what would have happened if it was tried with a farang only account on either end. The reason Bangkok Bank can do it and not the others is that Bangkok Bank is a true international bank with branches outside Thailand. They have one in New York and I suspect they have one in London as well.

And have the money converted here and sent in the destination currency. I talked to both banks and calculated the difference of sending dollars or baht and by converting here at Bangkok Bank and sending dollars I ended up with $18,000 more because the exchange rate for baht at an American bank is really bad.

Yes, you do have an advantage with Bangkok Bank. There is one in London and my pension is paid into that with automatic transfer into my account in Hua Hin. I've heard of people drawing a banker's draft here and checking it in at the Bangkok Bank in London.

Very easy to send up to 1m baht back to the UK or anywhere else I would imagine. Go to your bank, I have sent to UK and Australia. I use Kasikorn, tell the lady at the counter you have to send money back, they give you a form with numerous options of reasons why you wish to send money overseas. I select education for for child overseas, and Bobs your uncle. Last time took no more than 20 minutes from entering to leaving the bank
No questions at all about where your funds came from, residency or anything or even why you are sending to your own bank account overseas.

Went to the Bangkok Bank branch (I bank with them) next to Market Village and the manager said you can only transfer a max of $5000 per day.

Anyone tried to transfer larger amounts with Bangkok Bank and if so was it at the main branch on Petkasem Rd.??

Any help would be appreciated - need to send a large amount back to the UK soon.

Not done it through Bangkok bank but with Kasikorn you can send 1m Baht with no problem. Why not open an account with Kasikorn, transfer your cash then send it out.

Often the cashiers have no idea what is allowed try asking for a supervisor to get the correct figures.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I (we) transferred 7.5 million baht to a U.S. bank from Bangkok Bank with no issues at all. It took a couple of days to show up in my U.S. bank and the cost on both ends was minimal. The manager there told us that we could transfer up to 1 million U.S.D. per year with no problems. Our account is a joint account with me and my Thai wife as account holders so maybe it was because a Thai has ownership over the account. We did use the branch beside Market Village.

Thanks for the info - hhfarang, maybe a different agreement between the US & Thai governments over transfers or as you say because you have a Thai wife.

May have to consider changing banks but would be a pain at this stage, will try the main branch tomorrow and see what they say.
