I remember 'penny for the guy' when I was kid, but I suppose that's a thing of the past now too. <sigh>
Maybe it varies from place to place, but I grew up in Cornwall (UK), and i can remember, some (nearly) 40 years ago, dressing up and going door to door. Treats were rare, but we tried to scare those we visited. WE did this almost every year in my childhood, together will neighbourhood kids. Actually we were often called more than just Scallywags. I'm sure it was US inspired, but seemed quite well established by the time I joined in.
Now my own kids dress up here in Bangkok and also go door-to-door, but you need to know the right (Farang-populated areas to visit). Treats much more common here, and seems very international now.
